Greece is facing a sharp change in weather as rain and storms are moving across parts of the country. Strong winds are also picking up over the seas. The National Meteorological Service (EMY) issued a weather warning on Tuesday, September 22. The warning runs through early Wednesday.
Forecasters expect heavy rain and storms in central and northern Greece. Thessaly, the Sporades, Halkidiki, and Evia are among the main areas. The storms may also bring lightning and hail.
Temperatures Fall Across Greece
The weather change is also bringing cooler days. Western Macedonia will see temperatures from 8°C to 23°C. Macedonia and Thrace will reach up to 26°C. Thessaly will reach around 27°C. Parts of mainland Greece and Crete will reach 28°C to 29°C.
Athens will also see rain and cooler weather. Forecasters expect local storms, mainly in the afternoon. Temperatures will range from 23°C to 26°C. Winds will grow stronger across the Aegean and Ionian seas. They may reach 6 to 7 Beaufort in some areas. Forecasters expect the weather to improve after Wednesday morning.
Samaria Gorge Closes in Crete
The weather has also changed plans at one of Crete’s best-known sights.
Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA) closed the Samaria Gorge on Tuesday, September 22. The closure covers both entrances, at Xyloskalo and Agia Roumeli.
OFYPEKA manages Greece’s protected areas and used the latest EMY forecast to make its decision. Forecasters expect rain and storms in the area. Rain may reach 10.5 millimeters at Xyloskalo and 8 millimeters at Agia Roumeli.
These levels are above the safety limits for the gorge.
