Piraeus rose to second place among the Mediterranean’s leading cruise home ports in 2025, strengthening its position as one of the region’s most important passenger gateways.
The Greek port recorded 1,091,364 home-porting passenger movements during the year, according to the latest MedCruise Statistics Report.
Home-porting passengers begin or end their cruise at the port, rather than visiting Piraeus only as a stop on a wider itinerary. The result moved Piraeus from fourth to second place in the Mediterranean rankings. Home-porting activity increased by 8.25 percent compared with 2024 and by 188.04 percent compared with 2022.
Barcelona remained the Mediterranean’s busiest cruise home port, recording 2,311,722 home-porting passenger movements in 2025. The Balearic Islands, which had previously occupied second place, dropped to fourth after home-porting traffic declined by 21.71 percent. The fall helped clear the way for Piraeus to advance in the rankings.
Piraeus retains seventh place in total passenger traffic
Piraeus also recorded more than 1.86 million total cruise passenger movements in 2025, representing an increase of 9.68 percent from the previous year. The performance allowed the port to retain seventh place among Mediterranean ports for overall cruise passenger traffic.
Long-term growth remained particularly strong. Passenger movements through Piraeus increased by 111.65 percent compared with 2022 and by 513.64 percent compared with 2021, when the cruise industry was still affected by pandemic-related restrictions.
The figures reflect the rapid recovery and expansion of cruise activity at Greece’s largest passenger port. Piraeus also welcomed 863 cruise ship calls during the year, according to MedCruise. The total marked an increase of 6.54 percent from 2024 and 127.70 percent from 2021.
Barcelona overtook Piraeus to take first place in the cruise-call rankings. The Spanish port received 895 calls in 2025, following a year-over-year increase of 13.15 percent.
Mediterranean cruise market continues to grow
The wider Mediterranean cruise market also posted further growth in 2025. The region’s 10 leading ports handled a combined 8.14 million home-porting passenger movements, an increase of 5.89 percent from the previous year. Barcelona maintained a clear lead in home-porting, while several mid-ranking ports also reported significant gains.
Across all cruise passenger movements, the top 10 MedCruise ports welcomed more than 21.75 million passengers in 2025. That figure represented growth of 13.61 percent compared with 2024 and 664.51 percent compared with 2021. Barcelona led the overall passenger rankings with almost 4 million movements, up 9.39 percent year over year. Marseille ranked second, followed by the Balearic Islands.
The top 10 ports also registered a combined 7,233 cruise calls in 2025, an increase of 15.36 percent from the previous year. Las Palmas Ports recorded 830 calls and moved into third place in the rankings. The strongest increase in cruise calls was recorded by the combined Italian port group of Messina, Milazzo, and Reggio Calabria. The same group also posted the sharpest growth in passenger movements, with traffic rising by 132.37 percent year over year.
The figures point to broader momentum across the Mediterranean, with growth extending beyond the region’s traditionally dominant cruise destinations.
Piraeus consolidates its position among leading Mediterranean cruise home ports
Piraeus’ rise to second place in home-porting highlights the port’s growing role as an operational base for cruise lines serving the Eastern Mediterranean. Home-porting carries greater economic significance than transit traffic because passengers who begin or end their journey in Piraeus are more likely to use hotels, restaurants, transportation services, and attractions in Athens and the surrounding region.
The 2025 figures suggest that Piraeus has moved beyond its post-pandemic recovery and entered a new period of sustained cruise growth. With more than 1.09 million home-porting passenger movements, rising overall traffic, and continued growth in cruise calls, the port enters 2026 with strong momentum and a more prominent position in the Mediterranean cruise market.
