Anya Taylor-Joy singled out Athens’ people, youth culture, and nightlife while recalling her time in Greece filming Romain Gavras’s Sacrifice. She also described Santorini’s volcanic landscape as an ideal workplace for someone who loves nature.

The actress discussed her experiences during an October 7 interview with Greek public broadcaster ERT. Her reflections come ahead of the film’s October 16, 2026, Netflix debut in the United States and France.

However, her connection with Greece extends beyond her own filming commitments. Taylor-Joy recalled two stays in Athens, including one accompanying her husband while he worked on a movie.

What Anya Taylor-Joy Loved About Athens

According to E-Radio’s Greek account of the interview, Taylor-Joy spoke warmly about living in the Greek capital. She particularly enjoyed meeting people and exploring the city on foot. Meanwhile, her enthusiasm extended from its clubs and youthful energy to the sea.

Rather than focusing solely on the film set, she described the pleasures of spending time in Athens. Her recollections brought together the city’s social life and her enjoyment of its surroundings.

Beyond Athens, Taylor-Joy also embraced the outdoor demands of filming on Santorini. She recalled walking uphill on the volcano each day to reach work. For an actress who enjoys nature, that routine added to the experience rather than diminishing it.

Gavras separately described the production’s volcanic climbs in an interview with Netflix. Each morning, the team walked uphill for almost an hour while donkeys carried equipment. He welcomed the opportunity to take his cast onto a real volcano.

The production also took the filmmakers beyond Greece. They shot on location in Bulgaria and Iceland, alongside their Greek locations. Additionally, Gavras recalled bringing 200 extras in gala clothing to a northern Greek mine.

Greek golden ratio: world’s most beautiful women

Anya Taylor-Joy has also been named one of the world’s most beautiful women in a ranking based on the ancient Greek golden ratio.

Over the years, millions of people have explored ancient Greece’s golden ratio, a magical number that has fascinated the minds of experts and amateurs alike for centuries. At approximately 1.618, the golden ratio is not just an abstract mathematics figure. Rather, it symbolizes deep beauty that has inspired artists, musicians, and architects throughout history.

The science of beauty has placed Anya Taylor-Joy, Bella Hadid and Margot Robbie among the world’s top ten most attractive women.

American actress Anya Taylor-Joy is at number one with a 94.66 percent score. For playing Emma Woodhouse in the period drama Emma (2020), Taylor-Joy received her first Golden Globe Award nomination.

She earned international recognition for playing Beth Harmon in the Netflix period drama miniseries The Queen’s Gambit (2020), winning a Golden Globe and SAG Award, and being nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.

She is followed in second place by American actress and singer Zendaya with a 94.37 percent score. Her accolades include two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. Time named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2022.

American fashion model Bella Hadid is in third place. Throughout her career, she has made 26 appearances on international Vogue covers. In 2022, she was named Model of the Year by the British Fashion Council. Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world on its annual list in 2023.

A Darker Role in Sacrifice

During the conversation, Taylor-Joy also reflected on the opportunities that have shaped her career. She credited gratitude as an important part of her outlook.

Nevertheless, she emphasized personal effort alongside good fortune. She recalled her father teaching her that working harder could help create greater luck.

Meanwhile, Sacrifice gives Taylor-Joy a character with a very different relationship to a volcano. She plays Joan, a cult leader whose followers interrupt a celebrity charity gala. Chris Evans plays Mike Tyler, a struggling movie star seeking a comeback.

The group takes hostages, believing three human sacrifices will prevent an imminent catastrophe. Gavras co-wrote the dark comedy with Will Arbery, drawing inspiration partly from Greek mythology.

The ensemble also includes Vincent Cassel, Salma Hayek Pinault, John Malkovich, Sam Richardson, and Ambika Mod. Musicians Yung Lean and Charli xcx appear alongside them.

Netflix will begin streaming Sacrifice on October 16 in the United States and France. Its October lineup places the film among the month’s new movie arrivals.
