A short film co-produced by Greek and Dutch creators took home the Short Cuts Award for Best International Short Film at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in Canada.
“Mammalia”, written and directed by Elia Kalogianni and produced by Alexandros Tiliopoulos of Open Borders Productions, is a co-production between Greece and the Netherlands, with the participation of GARUFO Films, CineSud and Atalante Productions, and the support of EKKOMED, ERT and CineSud.
“This distinction comes to confirm the dynamic international path of Elia Kalogianni, whose work moves between cinema and the visual arts and has been presented at important festivals and international events,” The Hellenic Film Academy wrote on Facebook.
Mammalia had its world premiere in the Strange Cuts programme of Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) a few days earlier.
The film stars Romanna Lobach and Maria Filini. According to the film’s synopsis, Antonia (45) and Mavra (27) live together in a house with domesticated animals.
“Beneath fragile routines, a struggle for dominance unfolds,” Open Borders Productions describes. “As care turns into control, their relationship escalates into a disturbing power game that blurs the boundaries between protection, exploitation and violence.”
