Greece maintains high satisfaction levels across digital platforms and social media, with culture, gastronomy, and local hospitality serving as the primary drivers of positive traveler sentiment. Conversely, environmental pressures, infrastructure strains, and sustainability concerns represent the key areas receiving lower visitor ratings.

These findings stem from a report by the Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation (INSETE) titled “The Reputation of Greece and its Regions on Social Networks and Travel Websites” for the second quarter (April–June 2026). Based on the Net Sentiment Index (NSI), Greece ranks third among key competitor destinations, trailing Croatia and Portugal. Overall traveler satisfaction across review platforms reached 9.2 out of 10, outperforming the European average of 8.9.

What Won Travelers Over: Gastronomy, Culture, and Genuine Hospitality

Review data shows that traveler satisfaction was driven by high-quality services, local authenticity, and cultural heritage:

• Culture & Heritage: Dominated online conversations with over 31,000 mentions, earning the highest sentiment score (88) and an average satisfaction rating of 9.2.

• Gastronomic Experience: Generated approximately 20,000 mentions with a sentiment score of 81 and a 9.3 rating. Crete’s recognition as a European Region of Gastronomy and the diversity of regional cuisine were major highlights.

• Staff & Hospitality: Service quality and staff friendliness achieved the top score of 9.6 in written reviews (sentiment score of 85), confirming that human connection remains one of the strongest assets of the Greek tourism product.

• Sea & Coastal Activities: Experiences tied to beaches, islands, and scenic coastlines maintained high satisfaction at 9.1.

Leading Regions in Traveler Ratings

Visitor satisfaction revealed an interesting geographic distribution, with mainland destinations achieving top marks and surpassing the national average.

Leading the rankings were Thessaly and Western Macedonia, both scoring 9.5. Thessaly stood out for its cultural offerings while earning strong reviews for sustainability and hospitality. Western Macedonia delivered standout results in gastronomy (9.5) and secured the top spot nationwide for value for money with a 9.7 rating.

Following closely in second place were Western Greece and the Cyclades, each at 9.4. Western Greece was praised for its balanced travel experience and strong value for money (9.3), while the Cyclades excelled in culinary experiences (9.4) and cleanliness/hygiene standards (9.2).

Most other destinations hovered near the national average of 9.2, including Attica, Central Macedonia, Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, Epirus, the Ionian Islands, the North Aegean, and the Peloponnese. In contrast, Crete, Central Greece, the North Aegean, and the Dodecanese recorded slightly lower average ratings.

On the critical value-for-money index, top performers alongside Western Macedonia (9.7) included Epirus (9.4), followed by Western Greece, the Ionian Islands, and Central Greece (all at 9.3).

The Low Points: Climate Pressure, Sustainability, and Hygiene Disparities

Despite broadly favorable feedback, several challenges dampened traveler sentiment and resulted in lower scores:

• Environment & Extreme Weather: Environmental discussions generated nearly 12,000 mentions but recorded the lowest positive sentiment (58). High summer temperatures, Saharan dust storms that caused flight disruptions, water shortages, and wildfire risks were frequent sources of concern.

• Sustainability & Infrastructure: The nationwide sustainability score dropped to 8.4, with the Cyclades recording the lowest score (6.9) due to significant pressure on local infrastructure during peak season.

• Cleanliness & Hygiene: While certain island groups rated highly, notable disparities emerged across regions, with lower scores reported in the Peloponnese (6.7), the Ionian Islands (7.7), and Eastern Macedonia & Thrace (7.9).

Looking at source markets, travelers from the United States (9.5) and the United Kingdom (9.3) reported the highest satisfaction levels. Visitors from Germany (8.8), Italy (8.8), and France (8.7) were slightly more reserved, while domestic Greek travelers rated their overall experience at 9.0.
