Researchers studying 3,000-year-old bronze foils in China have uncovered evidence of sophisticated metalworking at the Sanxingdui site, revealing how ancient Chinese craft combined hammering, incising, punching, embossing, and painting to create thin decorative objects during the Bronze Age.
The study, led by Jianbo Guo, examined bronze foils recovered from sacrificial pits at Sanxingdui in southwestern China. The site belonged to the ancient Shu culture and flourished during the Late Shang period, around 1400 to 1100 BC.
Researchers found that Sanxingdui craftspeople used carefully selected bronze alloys and various techniques to shape and decorate the objects. Some methods may reflect influences from distant regions. The findings also suggest Sanxingdui was part of wider networks through which technologies and artistic ideas moved during the Bronze Age.
Craftspeople hammered bronze into thin sheets
Researchers examined representative foils recovered from Sacrificial Pits 2, 3, 7 and 8. Because of the rarity and archaeological importance of the artifacts, the team limited destructive testing to selected samples.
Chemical analysis showed that craftspeople mainly used tin-copper-lead alloys and tin-copper alloys. The foils contained between 7% and 16% tin, while lead generally remained below 7%. That composition presented a challenge. Higher levels of tin make bronze harder but also reduce its ability to bend without breaking. Researchers concluded that craftspeople had to heat the metal during production before repeatedly hammering it into thin sheets.
According to the researchers, aspects of this process resemble metalworking traditions associated with northern steppe regions. However, the similarities do not necessarily prove that the technology came directly from those areas. Evidence in ancient China also shows how communities could adopt and adapt Shang-style bronze-working techniques while developing their own local traditions.
Foils were decorated using a variety of methods
Constructing the thin sheets was only part of the process. Sanxingdui craftspeople also used a wide range of techniques to decorate their surfaces. Researchers identified incising, punching, embossing, and painting among these. Microscopic examination allowed the team to divide the surfaces into six categories. These included leaf-vein patterns, dot patterns, relief designs, openwork decoration, painted surfaces, and undecorated pieces.

Some foils were shaped to resemble fish, birds, animals and leaves. Others carried animal-mask designs or forms resembling “zhang,” a type of ancient jade object. The team also examined holes cut into the bronze. Craftspeople appear to have made the perforations by striking the metal from one side. Small burrs around some holes were left in place rather than trimmed away.
Researchers concluded this detail offers insight into production choices and suggests artisans balanced the decorative appearance of the foils with their practical function rather than seeking perfectly finished surfaces in every case.
Decorative techniques reveal cultural connections
Researchers also traced possible influences behind Sanxingdui’s decorative methods. The incised designs may have drawn inspiration from techniques used to decorate jade and gold objects in China’s Central Plains. Sanxingdui craftspeople appear to have adapted those methods rather than simply copying them. Over time, the techniques evolved into a distinctive local tradition associated with the ancient Shu civilization.
The findings add to evidence that technologies and artistic traditions spread across large areas during the Bronze Age. Other archaeological discoveries in China have also revealed long-distance cultural and technological exchanges involving metalworking traditions and the movement of materials.
That combination of outside influence and local innovation is significant because Sanxingdui has long been known for objects unlike those found at many other Bronze Age sites in China. Researchers stated that the bronze foils provide another way to trace how Sanxingdui artisans absorbed ideas from elsewhere and transformed them into their own craft traditions.
Bronze foils provide new clues to ancient Shu
The Sanxingdui site initially attracted archaeological attention following discoveries in 1927. Excavations of two major sacrificial pits in 1986 transformed understanding of the site after archaeologists recovered more than 780 bronze artifacts. Further excavations between 2019 and 2022 uncovered six additional sacrificial pits and numerous objects. Many of Sanxingdui’s monumental bronze castings have received considerable attention, while the much thinner bronze foils have been studied less extensively.
The new analysis helps fill that gap by examining how the objects were made and decorated. Bronze objects also carried important ritual meanings across ancient China. Other discoveries, including bronze objects placed in ancient Chinese burials, have shown how metal artifacts could be connected to ritual practices and beliefs on the afterlife.
Guo and colleagues have concluded that the Sanxingdui foils demonstrate both technical innovation and ritual significance. Their production reveals artisans could manipulate challenging bronze alloys into thin sheets and transform them through several decorative processes. The findings also strengthen evidence that Sanxingdui participated in wider cultural exchange networks while maintaining a distinctive local tradition, offering new insight into the technology and culture of the ancient Shu civilization.
