Chinese scientists have confirmed that a rare iron object found at the ancient Sanxingdui site was made from material that came from space. The discovery marks the earliest known extraterrestrial iron artifact from the Bronze Age in southern China and offers new insight into early metal use before iron smelting began.
The study, published in Archaeological Research in Asia, focuses on an elongated object shaped like an axe or tool. It measures about 20 centimeters (7.8 inches) in length. Archaeologists recovered it from pit number 7, part of a large sacrificial complex at Sanxingdui, one of China’s most important archaeological sites.

Careful recovery reveals a fragile artifact
The object was found embedded vertically along the wall of the pit. Its fragile condition required careful handling. Archaeologists removed it together with the surrounding soil and transferred it to a conservation laboratory.
During early cleaning, three small fragments separated from the main piece. These fragments allowed scientists to carry out initial tests without damaging the artifact.
Scientific tests confirm meteoritic origin
Researchers first used portable X-ray fluorescence to study the object’s composition. The results showed that it contained more than 90 percent iron along with a notable amount of nickel. This unusual combination raised early suspicions about a non-terrestrial origin.
To confirm this, scientists conducted detailed analyses using metallography and scanning electron microscopy with X-ray spectroscopy. The results showed that the metal formed under conditions consistent with meteoritic iron.
Under the microscope, the structure revealed uniform iron crystals, known as equiaxed ferrite grains. These form when metal cools very slowly in space over long periods. Chemical mapping also showed that nickel was distributed evenly throughout the material, a feature that cannot be easily produced using early metalworking techniques.
Distinct from other ancient Chinese finds
Meteoritic iron artifacts have been identified elsewhere in China, but they remain rare. Most examples come from northern regions and are often linked to the Shang dynasty. In those cases, iron was usually combined with bronze to form composite tools or weapons.
The Sanxingdui object differs from these finds. It is made entirely of meteoritic iron and shows no evidence of decorative inlays. Researchers point to a different metallurgical tradition in southwestern China.
The artifact also stands out for its size and composition. It is the largest meteoritic iron object found in China so far and contains a higher level of nickel than most known examples.
Function still unclear
The object was found in a ritual context, suggesting it may have held symbolic meaning. However, its exact function remains uncertain.
Some bronze artifacts from Sanxingdui show signs of being cut or modified after casting. Because meteoritic iron is harder than bronze, the object may have been used as a tool for shaping or refining bronze surfaces. Researchers say more evidence is needed to confirm this idea.
Insight into early innovation and belief
The discovery provides a rare glimpse into how ancient communities used materials from outside Earth. It also highlights regional diversity in early metal use across China.
Researchers say the artifact fills an important gap in the study of early metallurgy in the region. It shows that more than 3,000 years ago, people at Sanxingdui selected a material that came from the sky and placed it within a ceremonial setting.
Further research may help identify the exact type of meteorite and clarify how the object was used. For now, the find stands as a powerful example of early technological skill and symbolic thinking in Bronze Age societies.
