An 82-year-old man died after a fight with a 76-year-old man reportedly sparked by a dispute over a sun lounger at a beach in Greece on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. at Vouliagmeni Beach, south of Athens. According to preliminary information being investigated by police, an argument over a sun lounger quickly turned physical.
A 21-year-old woman who was with the 76-year-old also reportedly became involved in the fight.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the 82-year-old’s death and the exact role of those involved.
“Sunbed Wars”
Disputes over sun loungers are nothing new at crowded beaches, hotels and resorts across Europe, where competition for the best spots has often been dubbed the “sunbed wars.” Vacationers have become notorious for waking up early to reserve loungers by leaving towels on them, whether by the beach or around resort swimming pools. Some even put their towels down the night before to secure a preferred spot for the following day. The ritual is particularly familiar at busy Mediterranean destinations, including Greece, during the crowded summer months.
82-Year-Old Dies After Fight
An ambulance took the 82-year-old to hospital following the altercation. He died about an hour later, according to the information reported by Greek media.
Two People in Police Custody
Police are holding the 76-year-old man and the 21-year-old woman for questioning as the investigation continues. Authorities also brought the owner of the beach business in for questioning, according to the report.
Investigators are working to establish exactly how the dispute began, what happened during the confrontation and the circumstances surrounding the 82-year-old’s death. The incident took place along the Athens Riviera, where a reported dispute over a sun lounger escalated into a fatal confrontation.
