Three Greek breweries won gold at the World Beer Awards 2026, marking one of the country’s strongest beer showings yet in the global competition. Pineios Brewery, Nissos and Ammousa each earned a Gold Country Winner title, the highest domestic honor in their respective beer styles, according to results released by organizers.
Pineios Brewery, based on the outskirts of Larissa in central Greece, took the top spot in the Hoppy Pilsener category with its beer Pineios. Named after the legendary Pineios River, it is the first and only brewery operating in Larissa, according to the Hellenic Association of Brewers.
Nissos and Ammousa score gold in the Stout and Porter Category
Nissos, founded on the Cycladic island of Tinos, won gold in the Strong Porter category for its beer 7 Beaufort. The brewery was started by journalist Maya Tsoclis and food and beverage consultant Alexandros Kouris.
Nissos beers undergo no pasteurization and rely on natural carbonation, a process the company says has earned its products European certification for antioxidant content.
Ammousa, based in Patras in the Peloponnese, claimed gold in the Tropical Stout category. The brewery was founded by mechanical engineer Georgios Danos, who began brewing as a hobby in the basement of his home before turning it into a commercial operation. Ammousa now counts 25 international awards among its accolades.
Greek Breweries win gold as World Beer Awards 2026 names global best
Beyond the country-level results, the World Beer Awards 2026 also named winners for World’s Best across broader categories. Harvey’s Brewery of Lewes, England, took World’s Best Dark Beer honors for its Lewes Castle Brown Ale.
In Belgium, Bavik, brewed by the De Brabandere family in the West Flanders village of Bavikhove since 1894, was named World’s Best Lager for its Super Pils.
The wins add to a growing list of achievements for Greek breweries, whose gold finishes at international awards continue to raise the profile of the country’s craft beer industry.
