Greece’s Recruitment Directorate has announced significant changes to military service conditions for young men born in the first months of 2008, introducing a shortened service term as well as more flexible rules for those planning to pursue higher education.

Nine Months Instead of Twelve

According to the announcement, those born from January 1, 2008 to May 15, 2008, who are called to serve their military service with their class’s original enlistment notice (2026 Γ’ ΕΣΣΟ), may, provided they enlist and fully complete their main military obligation, be discharged after completing nine months of actual military service, according to the provisions of article 246 of Law 5265/2026.

This marks the first time such a reduction has applied to this specific class of conscripts. This will be the first time this measure is applied to those presenting immediately, in late August to early September, the Recruitment Directorate announced.

The measure is part of a broader legislative overhaul. Under Law 5265/2026, this measure was established as an incentive for fulfilling military obligations at a younger age, providing for definitive discharge after nine months of actual military service for conscripts with full main military obligation, provided they enlist and fully complete their obligation with their class’s original enlistment notice, meaning without taking a deferral.

It is worth noting that this reduced term is an exception rather than the rule. The standard military service in Greece remains 12 months, with the exception of special categories.

Easier Deferrals for Prospective Students

The new law also simplifies the process for young men who wish to pursue higher education before completing their service. Those referenced above may also request the granting of an enlistment deferral as prospective students of a Higher or University-level school, according to the provisions of article 188 of Law 5265/2026.

Crucially, applicants no longer need to prove they have already secured a place at an institution. For the granting of this specific deferral, prior enrollment in an educational institution is not required. Interested parties can submit their application through the official website of the Legal Corps of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, www.stratologia.gr, with identification of applicants’ details carried out using their personal taxisnet codes.

Who Is Affected

The changes apply specifically to conscripts of the 2026 Γ’ ΕΣΣΟ recruitment cycle, which covers young men born between January 1 and May 15, 2008. Those called to present themselves with the 2026 Γ’ ΕΣΣΟ, at the end of August to the beginning of September 2026, are entitled to serve a nine-month military term, provided they do not receive a deferral.

The reform reflects a broader policy shift by Greece’s General Staff and Ministry of Defense to encourage earlier enlistment while removing bureaucratic obstacles for young men balancing military obligations with academic ambitions.
