Former US President Joe Biden’s cancer has spread further and is causing significant pain, his son Hunter Biden said on Friday. This is one of the most candid accounts yet of Biden’s battle with the disease.
Speaking to the BBC’s Newsnight in an interview released Friday, August 7, Hunter Biden described the 83-year-old former president’s condition as “very painful” and “very debilitating.”
“The cancer has spread,” Hunter Biden said, adding that it had “metastasised into his bones and further.” He described watching his father deal with the illness as deeply difficult for the family.
“Cancer is really hard. It’s really sad to watch,” he said.
Joe Biden was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer in May 2025, four months after leaving the White House. At the time, his office announced that the disease had already metastasized to his bones. Tests gave the cancer a Gleason score of 9, Grade Group 5, indicating a particularly aggressive form of prostate cancer.
The latest comments from Biden’s son Hunter appear to indicate that the disease has continued to spread since that initial diagnosis, although the Biden family has not released detailed medical information specifying where else the cancer has been detected.
Biden rarely complains
Despite the seriousness of his condition, Hunter said his father continues to play a central role within the Biden family and rarely complains about what he is experiencing.
“My dad is, to this day, the centre of our family,” he said, describing him as “the best father, the best husband, the best grandfather.”
Hunter added that he sometimes wishes his father would speak more openly about the pain he is experiencing.
Biden has undergone hormone treatment and radiation therapy since his diagnosis. His cancer was initially described as hormone-sensitive, meaning doctors believed it could be effectively managed even though metastatic prostate cancer is generally not considered curable. In October 2025, people familiar with his treatment said he was responding well.
Former First Lady Jill Biden has also spoken increasingly openly about her husband’s health. In an interview released earlier this week, she said the former president continues to undergo testing approximately every three months and acknowledged that cancer is likely to remain part of his life permanently.
Recent reports have suggested that both the disease and its treatment have taken a visible physical toll at Biden, who has become noticeably frailer, despite people close to him saying his treatment appeared to be working.
