Thousands of Bird Species Share Just Eight Song Patterns

Birdsong ranges from simple whistles to rapid trills and buzzing calls. Yet a new study suggests that this remarkable variety is built from just eight basic sound patterns shared by thousands of bird species.

Researchers analyzed more than 116,000 bird songs from 3,160 species of passerines, the group that includes all songbirds and more than 60% of the world’s bird species.

Using machine learning, they found that birds create their songs by combining the same eight recurring “acoustic motifs” in different ways. The findings were published Thursday in the journal Science.

Researchers identify eight shared sound patterns

To conduct the study, researchers examined recordings collected through community science platforms, including iNaturalist and xeno-canto. The large dataset allowed them to compare birdsong on a global scale, revealing common patterns across species from different continents and habitats.

The eight motifs include slow, fast, and ultrafast trills; flat, slow-modulated, and fast-modulated whistles; harmonic stacks; and chaotic notes. While each species arranges these sounds differently, they appear to form a shared foundation for birdsong.

For example, the Eastern Wood-Pewee produces a smooth, slow-modulated whistle with its familiar “pee-ah-wee” call. The Bohemian Waxwing, by contrast, is known for an ultrafast trill made up of rapid, high-pitched notes that blend.

Bird size, behavior, and habitat shape songs

The study also explored why birds develop different kinds of songs. Researchers found that birds balance a trade-off between complexity and distance. More elaborate songs can carry more information but usually travel shorter distances.

Simpler songs travel farther but communicate less information. Body size, mating behavior, and habitat all influence where a species falls along that balance.

Larger birds generally produce simpler sounds, such as flat whistles and slow trills. Smaller birds are more likely to sing fast, changing whistles that require finer control. Species that communicate across long distances also favor simpler songs, while birds that interact at close range often use more complex vocalizations.

Tropical forests favor simpler songs

Habitat shapes birdsong as well. In tropical rainforests, dense vegetation limits how sound travels. Researchers found that birds living in these environments often rely on steady, simple songs that carry more effectively through thick forests.

Similar patterns appeared in tropical regions across Africa, South America and Asia, suggesting that different species evolved similar solutions to the same environmental challenge.

Temperate habitats tell a different story. Birds living in forests and open landscapes with smaller territories and shorter breeding seasons more often use complex trills and rapidly changing whistles, which may improve courtship and communication during the breeding season.

Findings may reshape animal communication research

Independent experts praised the research as an innovative way to understand bird communication. The researchers also believe the approach could help scientists study how frogs, insects and mammals communicate.

They say the findings show that despite the extraordinary diversity of birdsong, thousands of species rely on the same small set of acoustic patterns to produce their unique voices.
