How Ancient China’s Settlements Evolved Into an Early Civilization

Ancient Chinese settlements grew increasingly centralized over roughly 6,000 years, moving from dozens of scattered communities into just two major population centers, according to a new study focused on the Songshan Mountain region near the Yellow River.

The research, led by Lijie Yan of the Institute of Geography at the Henan Academy of Sciences in Zhengzhou, China, was published in the journal PLoS One.

The study examined nearly 2,000 archaeological sites spanning four cultural periods between 9,000 and 3,000 years ago, from the early Peiligang period through the Xia-Shang dynastic era.

Researchers used mapping software and mathematical models to figure out how people clustered together and how those clusters changed shape and location over time.

Instead of simply measuring distance on a map, the team calculated how difficult it would have been for ancient people to actually travel between sites, accounting for hills, rivers, and other obstacles.

Clusters shrink from nine to two as climate shifts

The results showed a clear pattern. During the earliest period, settlements formed nine separate clusters of uneven size scattered around the region. By the time of the Yangshao period, that number dropped to five. It fell again to four during the Longshan period.

Finally, during the Xia-Shang period, when early Chinese states were taking shape, the number of clusters shrank to just two, even though the overall population had grown more than fivefold. Those two clusters were centered on the modern cities of Zhengzhou and Yanshi.

Researchers found that climate played a major role in shaping settlement patterns during the earlier periods. Warmer, wetter weather during the Yangshao period appears to have supported the spread of millet farming and allowed communities to settle across open plains rather than staying close to hills and valleys.

But by the Xia-Shang period, temperatures had cooled, and conditions had grown drier, yet settlements kept pulling together rather than spreading out. That shift suggests political organization, not just weather and geography, had become the driving force behind where people chose to live.

Yan and colleagues wrote that the emergence of early states around Zhengzhou and Yanshi appears to have overridden the environmental pressures that once guided settlement choices, pointing to a period when social and political structures started shaping the landscape as much as nature did.

The findings add to a growing body of evidence about how early Chinese civilization formed. The team said their approach, which combines distance modeling with clustering statistics, could help researchers elsewhere study how ancient Chinese settlements grew centralized and apply similar methods to communities in other parts of the world.
