Giannis Antetokounmpo says he hopes to wear the blue-and-white jersey again when Greece returns to FIBA World Cup qualifying later this year, reaffirming his commitment to the national team while explaining why NBA players often struggle to participate in international competitions.
Speaking during a recent appearance on COSMOTE TV’s “Magic EuroLeague” podcast, the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player said he intends to be available for Greece if called upon.
“If I am selected, I will probably be there,” Antetokounmpo said when asked about Greece’s upcoming FIBA World Cup qualifying games.
The Greek national team opens the second round of European qualifiers in late August against Romania before facing Montenegro and Portugal in the following months as it seeks a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Insurance rules make FIBA appearances difficult
Antetokounmpo also shed light on one of the biggest obstacles NBA players face when representing their national teams: insurance.
He explained that NBA contracts often require significant insurance coverage before players can compete in international tournaments, making participation more complicated than many fans realize.
“The insurance is very expensive,” he said, noting that while players are eager to represent their countries, financial and contractual issues can sometimes stand in the way.
His comments come after Greece competed in the first phase of qualifying without several NBA players on its roster.
Giannis reflects on Greece’s qualifying campaign
The NBA star who officially began a new chapter in his NBA career as the Miami Heat introduced the two-time MVP following his blockbuster move from the Milwaukee Bucks, acknowledged that Greece’s qualifying campaign has not been straightforward, saying the team underestimated Romania and Portugal in earlier games.
Despite those setbacks, he expressed confidence in Greece’s ability to secure qualification if the squad approaches the remaining games with the right mentality.
Antetokounmpo has long described representing Greece as one of the greatest honors of his basketball career, helping lead the national team in multiple EuroBasket and FIBA World Cup tournaments.
A message beyond basketball
During the interview, Antetokounmpo also reflected on his upbringing in Greece, recalling the challenges he faced growing up as the son of Nigerian immigrants before receiving Greek citizenship.
He said those experiences continue to motivate him, adding that he hopes his journey inspires young people to pursue their goals regardless of the obstacles they encounter.
Over the years, Antetokounmpo has become one of Greece’s most recognizable athletes, using his platform to promote perseverance, inclusion, and national pride while remaining closely connected to the country where he was raised.
With another international window approaching, Greek basketball fans will now be hoping to see the NBA superstar once again lead Greece on the international stage.
