Elon Musk echoed a Norwegian journalist’s criticism on the continued imprisonment of Ilias Kasidiaris, the former spokesperson of the Greek neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party.

The world’s first trillionaire, owner of X and CEO and largest shareholder of Tesla and SpaceX, reposted Rebecca Mistereggen’s thoughts on the matter with the addition of a single comment that “This is messed up.”

Mistereggen had previously quoted Kasidiaris’ own post from June 18th – in which the convicted Golden Dawn figure was commenting on Elon Musk’s outcry over the imprisonment of British citizens for public comments made on X, and linking them to his own imprisonment in Greece.
“I am the only citizen in the EU who remains in prison with only justification an expression of opinion on X,” Kasidiaris’ original post claimed, refering to the rejection of one of his multiple requests for conditional release in recent years.

Greek Court upholds convictions of Golden Dawn members

In 2020, Kasidiaris was convicted to thirteen years’ imprisonment as a member of neo-Nazi Golden Dawn, which the court ruled was a paramilitary criminal organization operating under the guise of a political party.
Senior party members such as Kasidiaris were found responsible for directing the organization that was linked to the murder of Greek rapper and anti-fascism activist Pavlos Fyssas, and other violent attacks against migrants and political opponents.
Kasidiaris had tried to run for Athens mayor in 2023 despite incarceration.

Last March, the Court of Appeals in Athens upheld the convictions of 42 defendants associated with Golden Dawn, formally confirming the party’s status as a criminal organization.

This ruling, delivered five and a half years after the initial lower court decision, effectively sealed the verdict that the party operated as a criminal syndicate under the guise of a political organization. As the presiding judge announced the decision, she confirmed that the court maintained the mitigating factors previously recognized during the initial trial.
