Spain booked its place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final with a commanding 2-0 victory over France on Tuesday, producing one of the tournament’s most complete performances and ending Les Bleus’ hopes of a third world title.
The semifinal in Arlington, Texas, had been billed as a clash between the competition’s two strongest teams and featured some of football’s biggest stars, including Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Lamine Yamal, and Rodri.
Instead, it quickly became a demonstration of Spanish control.
Luis de la Fuente’s side dictated the tempo from midfield, denied France space in transition, and largely neutralized an attack that had terrorized opponents throughout the tournament. France had entered the semifinal after scoring 16 goals in six matches and was considered by many to be the favorite to lift the trophy.
Spain struck first in the 22nd minute when teenage sensation Lamine Yamal drew a foul from Lucas Digne inside the penalty area. Mikel Oyarzabal calmly converted from the spot to give the European champions a deserved lead.
France struggled to respond
Mbappé found little room behind Spain’s defensive line, while Dembélé and Michael Olise were repeatedly forced into wide areas away from dangerous positions. Spain’s pressing and positional discipline prevented Didier Deschamps’ side from establishing any rhythm in possession.
The decisive moment arrived in the 58th minute.
Pedro Porro finished off an excellent move involving Dani Olmo to double Spain’s advantage and leave France facing an uphill battle against the tournament’s best defense.
France’s frustrations grew as the match progressed. Their first shot on target reportedly did not arrive until the closing stages, a remarkable statistic considering the attacking talent available to Deschamps. Spain, meanwhile, never looked rattled and appeared in complete control throughout the second half.
Spain in the first World Cup final since 2010
The victory sends Spain into its first World Cup final since winning the tournament in South Africa in 2010 and extends an unbeaten run that has become one of the longest in European international football.
For France, the defeat ends another impressive World Cup campaign and denies Deschamps the opportunity to guide Les Bleus to a third consecutive final appearance. For Spain, it is further evidence that the generation led by Yamal, Rodri, Pedri, and Nico Williams may be building the country’s next football dynasty.
Spain will now face the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between England and Argentina with the chance to win its second World Cup title and complete one of the most impressive international runs of the modern era.
