A 46-year-old woman identified as a suspect in the fatal 2010 Marfin Bank arson attack has been arrested in England under an international arrest warrant.
Prior to her arrest, the woman had reportedly contacted authorities, claiming she intended to return to Greece to face justice. While maintaining her innocence, she had alleged that she currently lacked the financial means to purchase plane tickets.
The 46-year-old has been living in Brighton, UK, for the past eight years, where she has two children and works at Gatwick Airport. Extradition proceedings to return her to Greece are expected to begin in the coming days.
Three suspects of Marfin attack identified in cold case
The devastating arson attack on the Marfin Bank branch on Stadiou Street took place on May 5, 2010, costing the lives of three young employees, including a pregnant woman. It remains one of the darkest chapters in Greece’s modern history.
Out of a group of five individuals believed to have participated in the deadly firebombing, authorities have now identified three suspects:
- Two 42-year-old men arrested in Greece on Friday
- The 46-year-old woman arrested in the United Kingdom
The breakthrough in the long-standing case comes after a thorough re-examination of evidence. Investigators utilized advanced technology to analyze old and new testimonies, witness statements, and a crucial email, which collectively provided the definitive evidence needed to trace and apprehend the three suspects.
The two 42-year-old suspects arrested in Greece are scheduled to appear before a prosecutor tomorrow to submit their defense, following an extension they had requested and received.
