Greek authorities are investigating a grisly case in southern Greece after the body of an elderly man was discovered in a freezer at a disused hotel in Mystras, with police alleging his son concealed the death for years while continuing to collect his father’s pension.
The suspect, a 55-year-old man, was arrested after investigators discovered the body in the basement of the abandoned hotel in the Laconia region of the Peloponnese.
According to Greek public broadcaster ERT, the body showed no obvious signs of external injuries, although authorities said the exact cause and time of death will be determined through an autopsy and forensic examination.
Local media reported that the investigation began after a tip-off prompted police to question the suspect. During questioning, he allegedly admitted placing his father’s body in the freezer after the elderly man died of what he claimed were natural causes approximately two to two-and-a-half years ago.
Investigators are also examining allegations that the suspect continued receiving his father’s pension after his death, a claim that could lead to additional fraud-related charges if confirmed.
Neighbors Had Not Seen the Elderly Man for Years
According to local reports, residents had become suspicious after the elderly man disappeared from public view. Several neighbors told authorities they had not seen him for more than four years, while the suspect reportedly prevented anyone from entering the hotel property.
Police are now working to establish the precise timeline of the man’s death and determine whether any additional criminal offenses were committed.
The forensic investigation will be crucial in confirming when the elderly man died and whether his death resulted from natural causes, as claimed by the suspect, or whether further criminal charges may be warranted.
