A Greek police officer has been arrested by Internal Affairs investigators of the Hellenic Police for allegedly running a criminal network trafficking anabolic steroids and pharmaceutical products.
The 35-year-old officer, temporarily assigned to the Athens Traffic Police Sub-Directorate, is a professional bodybuilder. Authorities allege that he and his 30-year-old partner, who was also arrested, built a network of buyers to whom they sold illegal anabolic steroids.
Investigators say the pair also instructed customers on how to use the drugs and collected payments from the sales. Authorities identified the group’s alleged supplier as a 56-year-old Polish national, who flew to Poland on May 19 and has not been located since.
Anabolic steroids produced in British Virgin Islands
According to the case file, the Polish suspect imported anabolic steroids and pharmaceutical products from abroad. Investigators say he and the police officer operated a business involved in the sale of anabolic steroids, bodybuilding supplements, and hormones. Authorities believe the products were manufactured in a laboratory based in the British Virgin Islands and distributed primarily through the black market.
A 40-year-old man, who was also arrested, is alleged to have been the third member of the network. Investigators say the three men managed storage facilities where the illegal steroids were kept. From there, they either sold the products directly or supplied them to the police officer, who then distributed them to customers. Some shipments were also sent through the Hellenic Post.
Customers could pay by bank transfer, through the IRIS payment system, or via the digital banking platform Revolut.
Europol operation forced group to change tactics
According to investigators, intercepted telephone conversations revealed that a Europol operation on May 12, which dismantled an international criminal network involved in the production, distribution, and sale of counterfeit medicines and nutritional supplements, forced the group to change its methods.
Authorities believe the 56-year-old Polish suspect was connected to that network and fled Greece to avoid arrest. Investigators say the remaining members of the group then began searching for a new supplier. The Europol operation included searches at 138 companies and storage facilities in several countries, including Greece and Poland, where authorities seized thousands of packages of illegal substances.
Anonymous tip sparked investigation
The investigation began after Internal Affairs received an anonymous email in August 2025 alleging that the 35-year-old police officer was trafficking powerful anabolic steroids, which he also allegedly used himself.
The email also claimed that the officer was providing protection to business owners on Mykonos while falsely claiming sick leave from his police duties. The anonymous sender further alleged that the officer’s partner was trafficking cocaine and had wealthy clients. According to investigators, the criminal network had been operating since at least August 2025.
Eleven additional individuals have been charged with separate offenses that investigators say fall outside the activities of the alleged criminal organization. Among them are a 32-year-old special guard serving in the Patrol Sub-Directorate of the Athens Police Department, a 44-year-old police officer assigned to the IETA Police Department, and a physician at the Andreas Syngros Hospital.
