A spectacular backdrop illuminated in America’s stars and stripes set the stage at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) in Athens, where US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle hosted approximately three thousand distinguished guests to celebrate the historic 250th anniversary of American Independence.

Marking the US Semiquincentennial, Ambassador Guilfoyle set a grand, welcoming tone for the evening. The extensive gala spanned three separate viewing areas equipped with video monitors, featured a rich musical program rooted in country and R&B, and delivered highly consequential messages regarding the current heights of US-Greece bilateral relations, White House priorities for Athens, and the aerial superiority guaranteed to Greece through the upcoming acquisition of American F-35 fighter jets.

In her keynote address, Ambassador Guilfoyle spoke at length about the enduring historical, cultural, and social bonds uniting the two nations. She highlighted that the fundamental ideals of American Independence trace their roots back to Ancient Athens, while outlining the comprehensive initiatives of the current US administration in further fortifying this bilateral framework.

Guilfoyle highlights US-Greece partnership

Highlighting recent joint achievements, Guilfoyle emphasized major commercial milestones: “We welcomed a critical 20-year, $4.5 billion commercial agreement linking US Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) suppliers to the region for decades to come. But we didn’t stop there. Just weeks ago, we doubled down, bringing that total to $10 billion. Because that’s what America does. We set high goals, and we deliver.”

The Ambassador also highlighted the expanding collaborations between ExxonMobil, Hellenic Energy, and Energean in the Ionian Sea, alongside Chevron’s offshore exploration agreements with Hellenic. She stated that these ventures demonstrate “what can be achieved when American leadership combines with Greek ambition,” paving the way for Greece’s first offshore exploratory drilling operations in more than forty years.

Maritime and energy sovereignty

Shifting her focus to the “economies of the future,” the US Ambassador detailed how a $125 million financing package from the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) has successfully revitalized the Elefsina Shipyards into a thriving industrial hub. She underscored that President Trump has made American maritime and energy dominance cornerstones of foreign policy, viewing Greece as an invaluable partner in this vision.

“Together, we are building an open, predictable investment environment that strengthens our economies both now and for the future,” Guilfoyle observed. “And that is because our two nations know that when allies work together to build shared projects, our adversaries lose their leverage. That is what a strategic partnership looks like: Greater energy resilience. More jobs. Enhanced security.”

While Guilfoyle reaffirmed the strategic importance of the US military footprint in Alexandroupoli and Souda Bay, Crete, it was her remarks on American combat aviation that drew the most enthusiastic reaction from the crowd.

Applause for F-35 integration

The audience warmly received the Ambassador’s address regarding Greece’s upcoming acquisition of the F-35 Lightning II, the global gold standard in modern aerial combat technology.

“Soon, Greece will join an elite group of Allies operating the most advanced multi-role fighter aircraft in the world: the F-35,” Guilfoyle declared. “When Greece operates the F-35, it will be flying the exact same aircraft used by the United States Air Force. This translates to unparalleled interoperability. It means that when Greece operates alongside American forces—or other NATO partners—there will be zero gaps in the formation and no lag in operational capabilities. This is the most advanced aircraft to ever fly in Greek airspace, and we will be proud to fly by your side.”
