A major new exhibition at the Acropolis Museum explores how Greek art was adopted, adapted, and reinvented across the Italian peninsula over nearly three millennia. Coinciding with the museum’s 17th anniversary, “Inspirations: Ancient Greek Art Living in Italy” brings together 38 masterpieces, including 33 antiquities and five modern works, many of which have never before left Italy or been displayed in Greece.

The exhibition, which opened on June 15 under the auspices of Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni and her Italian counterpart Alessandro Giuli, traces a complex cultural dialogue from the 8th century BC through the 20th century.

Greek art in Italy through the millennia

“Greek art is one of the foundations of Western civilization, a language of images, forms, and symbols,” noted Professor Nikolaos Stampolidis, Director General of the Acropolis Museum, during a preview tour. “Without the groundwork laid by early Greek colonies and maritime trade, the shared European identity linking Greece and Italy wouldn’t exist. It’s a legacy that continually evolved right through to the 19th and 20th centuries.”

Rather than presenting the artifacts as isolated aesthetic objects, the exhibition draws on maps, reconstructions, and interpretive text to tell a deeper story of migration, politics, and taste. The curation highlights how early interactions with Etruscans, Latins, and the settlements of Magna Graecia (Southern Italy and Sicily) sparked a Roman fascination with Greek aesthetics that fundamentally shaped the classical world.

According to Stampolidis, the pieces on display serve as material witnesses to history, reflecting the specific conditions of their creation, their eventual relocation or plunder, and how they were copied and repurposed by their Roman hosts.

The free-admission exhibition is divided into seven thematic sections, transitioning from ancient ceramics and sculptures to 20th-century paintings that prove the classical legacy is far from static. The project is a collaboration between the Acropolis Museum and Italy’s Directorate General for the Enhancement of Cultural Heritage, led by Alfonsina Russo.
