The U.S. and Iran have reached an agreement in principle to immediately end the war in the Middle East across all fronts, including Lebanon. The breakthrough was announced in the early hours of Monday by Pakistan, which is playing a key mediating role. Washington and Tehran confirmed the news shortly after.

“The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now done,” U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, minutes after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on X that an agreement had been “reached.”

“I approve the full opening of the Strait of Hormuz with no transit fees and, at the same time, the immediate lifting of the U.S. naval blockade. Ships of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” the U.S. president added. However, he later clarified that the strategic waterway will reopen “as soon as the agreement is signed,” which is expected on Friday, June 19, to allow time for “the removal of sea mines” in the region.

The announcement triggered a sharp drop in oil prices, which had spiked since the outbreak of the war in late February closed the strait—a critical artery through which one-fifth of global oil consumption normally passes.

Iran says deal with US ends conflict in Lebanon

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi confirmed the deal on Iranian state television, stating it guarantees “an immediate end to the war and military operations across various fronts, including Lebanon.”

“Negotiations will begin within 60 days to reach a final agreement,” Gharibabadi said, noting that Tehran still views the U.S. with “distrust.” He outlined four key agenda items: “the lifting of all sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran, whether primary or secondary; the nuclear program; the reconstruction and economic development of Iran; and the establishment of a monitoring mechanism to guarantee compliance.”

Meanwhile, Iran’s MEHR news agency published what it claimed to be the 14-point “memorandum of understanding.” According to the document, which was leaked on Saturday but remains officially unconfirmed, the deal includes “the unfreezing of $24 billion in frozen assets during the 60-day negotiation period,” with “half of that amount to be made available to Iran before talks begin.”

The signing ceremony will take place on Friday, June 19, in Geneva, Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif announced. U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated he intends to attend, adding that President Trump’s attendance is also “possible.”
