A routine Sunday afternoon crossing turned into a harrowing race against time when a Rio–Antirrio ferry successfully intercepted a life-or-death crisis at sea, rescuing a 70-year-old woman trapped in treacherous waters.

What began as a peaceful swim quickly spiraled into a nightmare. Caught in the grip of powerful, unforgiving marine currents, the elderly woman was violently swept away from the shore, left utterly helpless and fighting for survival in the open sea.

Her desperate struggle did not go unnoticed. Mid-voyage, the crew of the vessel “Antonios M.” spotted the unfolding disaster. Acting on an urgent, directive order from the Hellenic Coast Guard, the captain immediately altered course, thrusting the massive ship into an emergency rescue operation.

Battling the very currents that threatened to swallow the swimmer, the crew executed a flawless, high-stakes maneuver to approach her. In a display of sheer professionalism and razor-sharp reflexes, the crew members reached into the waters and pulled the exhausted woman from the sea just in time.

Safely brought ashore, she was met by waiting medical personnel. In what can only be described as a miraculous escape, authorities confirm that despite her terrifying ordeal, she is in good health.
