It was 1973 when the New York Knicks won their last NBA championship, but Saturday they night managed a fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to win the series 4-1.
It was a rollercoaster game as the Knicks trailed by as much as 16 points and nine points early in the final quarter before making an epic comeback thanks to Jalen Brunson who led New York to a heart-stopping 94-90 win.
There were tears of joy and relief after the final whistle showed what the victory meant – not just to the team, but to the city of New York and a fanbase that has suffered playoff heartbreaks and decades of disappointment for more than 50 years.
But after the tears, followed a night of wild celebration for New York Nicks fans who poured out of the watch parties to cheer for the new champions in the New York city streets. Times Square was the main party arena, with people setting off fireworks and police trying to keep some order.
