New York Knicks Crowned NBA Champions After 53 Years

It was 1973 when the New York Knicks won their last NBA championship, but Saturday night they managed a fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to win the series 4-1.

It was a rollercoaster game, as the Knicks trailed by as many as sixteen points and were still down by nine early in the fourth quarter before staging an epic comeback. Led by Jalen Brunson, New York rallied to a heart-stopping 94–90 victory.

There were tears of joy and relief after the final buzzer, underscoring what the victory meant—not just to the team but to New York City and a fan base that had endured decades of disappointment and playoff heartbreak for more than fifty years.

Fourth Quarter (Knicks 29, Spurs 18)

The final period belonged to Brunson. Trailing by seven entering the quarter, the Knicks watched their star guard take over, scoring 13 consecutive points during a decisive stretch that completely changed the game. San Antonio’s offense stalled, missed opportunities mounted, and another sizable lead slipped away. New York’s defense shut the door in the closing minutes, sealing a dramatic comeback victory and the franchise’s first NBA championship in 53 years. Brunson finished with a legendary 45-point performance, cementing his place as the unquestioned hero of the night.
