Former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras presented his new political party in Athens on Tuesday, unveiling a platform built around what he described as the “democracy of everyday life.”
Speaking at an event in Thiseio, Tsipras announced that the new political formation will be called the Hellenic Left Coalition (Ελληνική Αριστερή Συμπαράταξη) , known by its Greek acronym ELAS.
The launch marks a new phase in the political activity of the former prime minister, who framed the party as a vehicle for democratic renewal, social rights, and a more active national strategy.
Tsipras sets out new party’s seven core commitments
Holding the party’s founding declaration, Tsipras said the new movement was placing “seven basic commitments” before citizens of Greece.
The first, he said, is a commitment to “a life with dignity,” placing social and economic security at the center of the party’s political message.
The second focuses on strengthening democracy “without immunities,” with Tsipras pledging transparency and accountability at every level of power and in the management of public money.
Economy, social rights, and climate resilience
The third commitment concerns what Tsipras described as a strong economy based on fair growth and dignity. He said the party would seek to change Greece’s productive model, with emphasis on agriculture and manufacturing.
The fourth pledge centers on a social state of rights, which Tsipras framed as a response to profiteering. He said health, education, social protection, housing, and culture must once again become rights for all, rather than privileges for a few.
The fifth commitment is for a resilient Greece in a world of constant crises. Tsipras linked this goal to protection and security in the face of energy instability, climate change, and the extreme consequences of environmental disruption.
Digital sovereignty and foreign policy
The sixth pledge focuses on digital democracy and sovereignty. Tsipras said Greece needs national technological infrastructure governed by sovereignty clauses, signaling that technology policy will be a central part of the party’s agenda.
His seventh and final commitment concerns Greece’s position in the world. Tsipras called for a strong Greece that safeguards its rights while building bridges of peace. He also advocated a “new national compass,” based on a return to a multidimensional and active foreign policy.
