Stella Marentaki has secured the gold medal at the European Taekwondo Championships in Munich, earning Greece a prestigious distinction and marking the first major senior title of her career.
The Greek athlete delivered a flawless performance in the -67kg category. Her journey to the podium began with a dominant 2-0 victory over Turkey’s Isil Zafer in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals, she eliminated Croatia’s Doris Pole before ousting Olympic silver medalist Aleksandra Perisic of Serbia (2-0) in the semifinals to clinch her spot in the final.
In the gold-medal match against Hungary’s Luana Marton, Marentaki dictated the pace from the start. After a brief 4-4 tie, the Greek champion surged ahead to take the first round 16-6. She maintained total control in the second round, finishing with a commanding 29-5 victory to secure the 2-0 match win and the top spot on the podium.
Stella Marentaki: Following in the footsteps of Alexandros Nikolaidis
Marentaki’s triumph in Munich further cements Greece’s standing as a powerhouse in the world of Taekwondo, a sport deeply woven into the country’s modern Olympic identity. Her success inevitably draws comparisons to the late, legendary Alexandros Nikolaidis, the two-time Olympic silver medalist (Athens 2004, Beijing 2008) and European Champion whose impact on the sport transcended the mat. Nikolaidis, who passed away in 2022 after a courageous battle with a rare form of cancer, remains the eternal symbol of Greek Taekwondo.
Greece saw further success in Munich as Apostolis Panagopoulos and Melina Georgiou reached the quarterfinals, finishing just one step away from the medal rounds.
The 2026 European Taekwondo Championships, held at the historic BMW Park in Munich, represent a landmark edition for the sport as they coincide with the 50th anniversary of the European Taekwondo Union (ETU). This prestigious four-day event has drawn nearly 400 elite athletes from 47 different nations, including a dedicated World Taekwondo Refugee Team, all competing for the continent’s highest honors across eight weight divisions.
