Experts from the Ministry of National Defense are expected to examine a naval drone discovered Thursday afternoon off the coast of Southern Lefkada, as authorities investigate its origin and intended purpose.

One scenario under consideration is a potential link to Ukraine. This follows a recent surge in drone attacks against Russia’s “shadow fleet”—vessels used to transport Russian oil in defiance of Western sanctions. Notable precedents include a December attack on the Russian tanker Qendil and a March explosion southeast of Malta that severely damaged the Russian LNG carrier Arctic Metagas.

The naval drone was spotted by fishermen near Cape Doukato, inside a local sea cave, with its engine reportedly still running. The black craft, equipped with high-tech systems including domes, antennas, and communication gear, caused immediate concern. The fishermen managed to secure the vessel and tow it to the port of Vassiliki, where it was handed over to the Hellenic Coast Guard.

Greece-Ukraine deal on naval drones in doubt

Greece and Ukraine agreed in November 2025 to establish a local production line for naval drones (unmanned surface vehicles) at Greek shipyards.

However, finalizing the contract has stalled because Ukrainian officials submitted clauses restricting the tactical deployment and potential resale of the technology. The dispute is directly tied to Ukraine’s delicate geopolitical balancing act with Turkey.

Ukraine wants to ensure the combat systems it developed are not utilized against Turkish naval forces in the Aegean or Eastern Mediterranean.
