A recent study explains how ancient Greeks picked their names and why their name patterns differ from modern ones. Laurent Gauthier, a researcher at Paris Nanterre University, used a mathematical model to test how “conformism” shaped naming choices in ancient Greece.
The paper appears in the journal Mathematical Social Sciences.
Gauthier built a dynamic model of name choice. The model allows people to prefer common names or, alternatively, to avoid them. It adds this choice to methods drawn from statistical physics.
Those older methods treated name change as mostly random. Gauthier’s model gives the process an extra degree of freedom. That change lets the model match historical data that earlier approaches could not.
The study focuses on anthroponyms. In ancient Greece, people commonly used a single personal name. Families did not pass on fixed surnames as in later eras. Parents could name children after a father or grandfather.
They could honor famous heroes like Hector or Achilles. They could also invent descriptive names, such as Hippolytus, meaning someone who frees horses. These practices left a distinct mix of popular and rare names.
Model shows conformism drove name selection in ancient Greece
Gauthier tested the model against name lists drawn from ancient sources. The researcher found that the distribution of ancient Greek names had a unique shape. It did not match patterns seen in contemporary naming data.
Simulations showed that high levels of conformism — a strong tendency to repeat well-known names — reproduced that historical shape.
The model also allowed for nonconformist choices, which kept a trickle of new or rare names in the system.
The paper situates the work at the intersection of sociology, physics and history. Sociology links names to social identity and tradition. Statistical physics has provided tools to model large-scale name distributions.
Cliometrics, the quantitative study of history, supplies the data. Gauthier used all three approaches. The result is a single framework that explains how social pressure and tradition could shape naming patterns over time.

The findings matter for scholars who study cultural transmission. They suggest that strong social pressure to conform can produce name distributions unlike those produced by random processes.
That has implications for other kinds of cultural data, such as fashions or language change. It also shows how a simple change in modeling assumptions can alter conclusions about the past.
Gauthier concludes that conformist naming offers a plausible explanation for the specific distribution of names in ancient Greece.
The study does not claim to capture every local custom. But it does show that a model with explicit conformism better fits ancient anthroponymic data than models that treat naming as mainly random.
