The race against time continues to locate a 34-year-old Greek diver who became trapped during a dive at a notoriously dangerous underwater site in Limanakia, Vouliagmeni, south of Athens.

Despite his extensive experience and countless hours spent underwater, he remains missing after a dive went wrong on Sunday afternoon (March 22).

A critical window for the trapped Greek diver

According to the latest reports, authorities have identified the specific underwater tunnel where the 34-year-old is believed to be trapped. The specialized recovery mission is expected on Tuesday. The delay is due to the extreme danger of the location, requiring the mobilization of highly specialized equipment and elite diving teams to navigate the perilous conditions.

The alarm was raised on Sunday when the victim’s diving partner surfaced alone and alerted the Hellenic Coast Guard. A massive Search and Rescue (SAR) operation followed, involving patrol boats, the elite Navy Underwater Mission Unit (MYA), and expert private cave divers.

The lethal reputation of the “Devil’s Well”

The site, known as the “Devil’s Well” (Pigadi tou Diavolou), is one of Attica’s most haunting underwater landmarks. Located at the second “Limanaki” cove, it features a 3-meter-wide circular opening at a depth of 11 meters.

While the entrance is visually stunning, the danger escalates rapidly beneath the surface. Beyond the sandy floor lies a second, narrow passage leading into an unexplored cavern system. Although a metal grate is in place to discourage entry, it is not an absolute barrier.

Expert divers warn that the tunnel features a steep downward pitch and violent, unpredictable currents. With nearly zero visibility, it is a site where even the most seasoned professionals can become disoriented in seconds.

A history of tragedy

The “Devil’s Well” gained its dark reputation in 1978 after three young American divers disappeared inside the tunnel. Their remains were only identified decades later, in 2007. Since the 1980s, a warning sign at the cave’s entrance has served as a grim final notice:

“Beyond this point, there is nothing to see that is worth more than your life.”

As the search continues, the disappearance of this experienced diver serves as a sobering reminder of the unforgiving nature of the “Well,” even for those who know the sea best.
