The dark comedy thriller One Battle After Another won Best Picture at the Academy Awards on Sunday, securing a total of six Oscars. The film, a Warner Bros. production starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a revolutionary turned single father, led a night defined by wins for unconventional narratives.

Director Paul Thomas Anderson earned his first three career Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Anderson, who had eleven previous nominations without a win, noted in his screenplay acceptance speech that he wrote the film as a message to his children about the state of the world.

Major highlights

Michael B. Jordan won for his dual roles in the supernatural drama Sinners. In his speech, he honored trailblazing Black actors like Sidney Poitier and Denzel Washington. Sean Penn won his third Oscar for his role in One Battle After Another. Penn did not attend the ceremony; presenter Kieran Culkin accepted the award on his behalf.

Amy Madigan, 75, won for the horror film Weapons, marking her first win forty years after her initial nomination. Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history as the first woman and first Black cinematographer to win the award for her work on Sinners.

Despite entering the night with a record-breaking sixteen nominations, Sinners finished with four awards. The film, set in the Jim Crow-era South, was recognized for its blend of Black culture and supernatural elements.
