While Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia led the Greek charge at this year’s Oscars with four nominations, including the coveted Best Picture, he wasn’t the only Greek name making waves—behind the scenes, producer Katherine Embiricos has emerged as a formidable force on the international stage, achieving a rare feat. This marks the second consecutive year she has been represented in the Oscar race.
Last year, Embiricos made headlines when the gripping documentary Hollywoodgate—which she executive-produced—made the Oscar Shortlist for Best Documentary Feature. In that project, director Ibrahim Nash’at risked his life to gain unprecedented access to the Taliban’s inner sanctum following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Building on that momentum, Embiricos returned to the global spotlight this year as a producer of The Voice of Hind Rajab.
A record-breaking premiere for Katherine Embiricos
Embiricos recently commanded the spotlight at the 2026 Golden Globes as a producer of The Voice of Hind Rajab, a docudrama directed by Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania. The film, which earned a Golden Globe nod for Best Foreign Language Film, has now secured an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature.
The film’s journey to the Oscars began with a historic debut at the Venice Film Festival. Following its premiere, the audience erupted into a 23-minute and 50-second standing ovation—the longest ever recorded in film festival history.
The power of a voice
The emotional heartbeat of the film is a harrowing, real-life audio recording: a 2024 emergency call from six-year-old Hind Rajab in Gaza. Trapped in a vehicle under heavy gunfire, the child’s desperate pleas to the Palestinian Red Crescent serve as the foundation for a narrative that has left global audiences stunned.
To bring this vision to life, Embiricos collaborated with a “who’s who” of Hollywood’s elite. The film’s executive producers include Brad Pitt, Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Alfonso Cuarón, and Jonathan Glazer.
Who is Katherine Embiricos?
Katherine Embiricos has built a reputation for fearless storytelling—her previous work includes Hollywoodgate, an Oscar-shortlisted documentary for which director Ibrahim Nash’at risked everything to film inside the Taliban regime. That project was co-produced with Odessa Rae (the Oscar-winning producer behind Navalny).
With a portfolio including The Story Won’t Die and It Doesn’t Matter, Embiricos is quickly becoming the go-to producer for films that don’t just entertain but actively intervene in the global conversation.
