Residents of Lavara in the Soufli municipality received an emergency 112 alert on Wednesday, advising them to remain on high standby due to the floods caused by the Evros River overflows. The situation escalated on Tuesday morning after a levee breached near the village of Amorio, sending torrents of water across the surrounding plains.

Following a meeting of the local coordinating body, officials ordered the closure of all access points along the vertical road axis. Residents in flood-prone housing were instructed to remain vigilant throughout the night and were provided with sandbags to create makeshift barriers.

Local reports from ERT indicate that floodwaters have already reached residential yards in Pythio, while a dam breach was reported in Lavara. In Kornofolia, another dam failure has exacerbated the crisis. Throughout the night, residents worked alongside emergency services to bolster defenses with sandbags.

The regional outlook remains grim. Bulgarian authorities have warned Greek officials to expect massive water inflows over the next 36 hours, while significant flows are also being recorded from Turkey. To date, more than 150,000 acres (15,000 hectares) of agricultural land have been submerged.

Floods at Evros: Red code

The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has officially placed the Evros Regional Unit under a “Red Code” alert from Tuesday, February 24 through Friday, February 27, 2026. The Risk Assessment Committee warns of a high probability of further flooding as river levels continue to rise. Both Local and Regional Operational Coordinating Bodies (TESOPP and PESOPP) have been fully mobilized to coordinate rescue operations and protect the local population.
