A senior officer of the Greek Armed Forces was arrested on Thursday morning, February 5, 2026, on suspicion of espionage, according to an official statement from the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (HNDGS).

While not yet officially confirmed, reports suggest the suspect is a middle-aged high-ranking officer in the Hellenic Air Force, serving in a “critical formation.”

The arrest took place within a military installation in a coordinated operation involving various state agencies and in the presence of an authorized military prosecutor. The HNDGS stated that the operation followed “clear evidence of criminal acts” as defined by the Military Penal Code.

According to the announcement, the officer is accused of collecting and transmitting classified military information to third parties—an act that posed a direct risk to Greece’s national interests. Sources indicate that the investigation was triggered by intelligence gathered by the National Intelligence Service (EYP).

If proven guilty of espionage under the Greek Military Penal Code (S.P.K.) and the relevant articles of the Criminal Code, a high-ranking officer faces severe legal, professional, and personal consequences. Because the case involves “secret information of military significance” and “danger to national interests,” it is treated as a felony of the highest order.
