Greece has secured a surprising bronze medal in a global ranking of sexual habits. According to the 2026 Global Promiscuity Index (GPI) published by the World Population Review, Greece is now the third most promiscuous country in the world, trailing only Australia and Brazil.

The index, which analyzes 45 countries, is not based on rumors but on a complex metric of six key indicators: the average number of sexual partners, the age at which virginity is lost, STI rates, the legality of prostitution, and social acceptance of premarital sex.

Greece achieved a total GPI score of 336.53, with people reporting an average of 10.6 sexual partners over a lifetime, while the average age for first sexual experience is 18.1 years. In addition, a high percentage of the Greek population considers sex between consenting adults outside of marriage to be morally acceptable, reflecting a notable shift in the country’s traditionally conservative social fabric.

The Global Promiscuity Index (GPI) analyzes the promiscuity of 45 countries by compiling six indicators.

Global standings: Most promiscuous nations

Greece finds itself in vibrant company at the top of the list. Australia took the top spot with a score of 360.14 (averaging 13.3 partners), followed by Brazil in second place (340.66). Greece beat out other notably liberal nations such as Chile (4th), New Zealand (5th), and Germany (6th).

Interestingly, Greece’s neighbor, Italy, followed closely in 7th place, suggesting a Mediterranean trend of high sociosexuality. Sociologists suggest that Greece’s ranking may be attributed to its warm climate, a thriving tourism industry that encourages summer flings, and a modern culture that increasingly balances traditional Mediterranean family values with Western liberal attitudes toward dating.

The report also references the “Sociosexual Orientation Inventory” (SOI), a measure of how restricted or unrestricted a culture is regarding casual sex. Greece’s high score indicates a significantly “unrestricted” mating strategy among its population.

While some may view the ranking with a wink, health officials note that high levels of promiscuity often correlate with higher STI transmission rates. However, the study notes that developed Western nations like Greece tend to have better access to sexual health resources than countries at the bottom of the list, such as India and China.
