Few topics attract as much public curiosity as the relationships of Gen Z. Politicians debate them, parents worry about them, influencers monetize them, and tech companies build entire platforms around their behavior. This generation, now roughly between 13 to 28 years old, is navigating relationships in a landscape shaped by digital culture, political polarization, and rapidly evolving ideas about gender and sexuality.
Having grown up with constant online access to both sex education and explicit content, Gen Z has encountered far more information and misinformation than previous generations. Over half of US teens report first encountering online pornography at age thirteen or younger. At the same time, many young people embrace broader definitions of identity and strongly support reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ protections, a trend especially pronounced among young women.
However, this same generation also lived through the isolating years of the pandemic and a political climate defined by disputes over bodily autonomy. Conservative movements encourage traditional family structures, while young people attempt to reconcile these pressures with their own values and lived experiences.
How identity shapes relationships for Gen Z
Recent surveys show that nearly one in four Gen Z adults identifies as LGBTQ+, far exceeding the national average of 10%. Millennials follow at 15%, with older generations reporting much lower rates.
Among Gen Z, young women in particular are significantly more likely to identify as LGBTQ+.
Why Gen Z is delaying sex and relationships
Although Gen Z has a strong cultural presence online, their actual sexual activity is reported to be lower than that of millennials of the same age was.
Research from the Kinsey Institute and Lovehoney reports that 25% of Gen Z adults aged 18 to 24 have not yet had sex. Gender differences are notable: one in three Gen Z men reports no partnered sexual experience, compared with one in five Gen Z women.
This trend extends into relationships more broadly. Young men are more likely to be single, contributing to what some researchers describe as a “relationship recession.”
Politics is reshaping relationships among Gen Z
The political divide among those of Gen Z is widening. In the 2024 US election, 56% of Gen Z men voted for Donald Trump, while 58% of Gen Z women supported Kamala Harris. This gap is influencing not only civic participation but also dating patterns. Many young adults say they avoid forming relationships with partners whose political views differ significantly from their own.
For young women, shifts in reproductive policy have amplified anxiety around sex. Nearly one in five Gen Z women reports being worried about having sex due to restrictive legislation. LGBTQ+ youth feel similar pressure, with 44% of LGBTQ+ Gen Z adults saying they do not feel comfortable being open about their identity while dating.
Dating priorities: Stability over experimentation
While discussions of non-monogamy are common online, Gen Z shows a notable interest in long term stability. Many young adults express a desire for committed relationships, perhaps in response to limited romantic experience or the uncertainty of the sociopolitical climate.
Data from Feeld, a dating app focused on open and untraditional arrangements, even shows that many of its Gen Z users express strong interest in traditional monogamous partnerships.
A more cautious approach to casual encounters
Views on casual sex have shifted sharply. Millennials in 2004 widely reported one night stands as common among their peers at a rate of 78%. In contrast, only 23% of Gen Z reported the same occurrence in 2024.
This caution also extends to early dating expectations. Nearly half of Gen Z considers sex on a first date a deal-breaker, reflecting a growing prioritization of emotional safety and compatibility.
Taking initiative is becoming harder
As dating apps continue to dominate the landscape, many Gen Z singles say initiating contact is becoming increasingly difficult.
According to one survey, 72% of Gen Z singles believe people their age are less likely to make the first move, compared with 63% of singles overall. This hesitancy adds another layer of complexity to modern dating.
AI enters the romantic sphere
Gen Z is the first generation to integrate generative AI into their romantic lives from the beginning of their dating experiences.
Young adults are using AI tools for companionship, emotional guidance, and strategic dating advice. While these technologies offer new forms of connection, experts caution users to remain aware of the emotional and ethical limitations of artificial intimacy.
