Greece is facing rising pressure from the flu, with 877 new hospitalizations and eight deaths recorded in the past week.
The figures come from the latest epidemiological bulletin issued by the National Public Health Organization (NPHO – EODY), covering the period January 5–11, 2026 and reflect sustained influenza activity nationwide.
ICU cases climb as flu hospitalizations and severe infections increase
Beyond overall hospital admissions, the number of serious flu cases is also rising. During the same week, 15 new patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza were admitted to intensive care units (ICUs).
Since the start of the current flu season, Greece has recorded:
- 45 ICU admissions linked to influenza
- 15 influenza-related deaths
Health officials say these figures underscore the ongoing risk for vulnerable groups, even as some community surveillance indicators show a slight decline.
Testing shows flu A is overwhelmingly dominant
EODY’s data indicate that influenza A remains the dominant strain circulating in Greece.
Out of 2,547 samples tested through community sentinel networks, SARI surveillance, and hospitals, 407 samples returned positive results for influenza viruses, including:
- 406 cases of influenza A
- one case of influenza B
Further subtyping of influenza A showed that among 264 samples analyzed:
- 181 were identified as A(H3)
- 83 were identified as A(H1)pdm09)
Doctors in Greece urge flu vaccination and early treatment
EODY continues to emphasize that vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure, especially for people at increased risk of complications.
Authorities also advise early medical consultation for flu-like symptoms, as antiviral treatment is most effective when started promptly.
Additional recommendations include:
- Wearing masks in crowded indoor settings
- Maintaining good respiratory hygiene
- Washing hands frequently
- Ensuring proper indoor ventilation
COVID-19 remains present, while RSV stays comparatively low
Influenza is not the only respiratory virus affecting the health system. COVID-19 continues to circulate, with EODY reporting in the same week:
- 189 new hospital admissions
- six deaths
- one new intubation
Meanwhile, RSV activity remains low in community monitoring, although EODY notes it is slightly higher in hospital settings compared with the same period last year.
Community mourns 13-year-old’s death as flu hospitalizations rise in Greece
The current wave has also raised concern following the death of a 13-year-old in Chalcis. The girl attended a special education school and reportedly had underlying health conditions.
In a public statement, the school’s Parents and Guardians Association expressed deep sorrow, honoring her strength and spirit while underscoring the severe impact seasonal flu can have, particularly on children and medically vulnerable individuals.
