OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Health, a secure platform that combines personal health data with artificial intelligence to help users better understand and manage their well-being. The tool allows individuals to link their medical records and wellness apps, enabling ChatGPT to provide more personalized and relevant responses.

This new feature builds on how people already use the AI system, with OpenAI reporting that hundreds of millions ask health-related questions each week. ChatGPT Health was designed to support rather than replace medical care. It does not offer diagnoses or treatments. Instead, the tool aims to help users prepare for appointments, understand lab results, explore insurance options, and track patterns in their overall health.

By linking apps such as Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal, users can see their health information in one place and get tailored insights.

Stronger privacy with a separate, encrypted health space

To protect sensitive medical data, OpenAI created a separate space within ChatGPT. Conversations, files, and app connections in this section remain isolated from regular chats.

Health-related discussions are not used to train AI models, and users are notified when they should move to the Health feature for added security. Encryption is applied by default, and multi-factor authentication is available for additional account protection.

Mira Murati, OpenAI’s chief technology officer, has said the team designed ChatGPT Health in close collaboration with physicians across sixty countries. Over 260 doctors contributed feedback more than 600,000 times, helping shape how the tool communicates medical information.

The focus, Murati said, has been on accuracy, clarity, and safety, especially when suggesting follow-ups with a healthcare provider.

How OpenAI created ChatGPT Health with medical expertise

Performance is regularly measured through HealthBench, an evaluation system developed with input from practicing clinicians. Rather than relying on exam-style accuracy checks, the framework depends on physician-written rubrics that judge responses on real-world medical standards, including context, urgency, and clarity.

Users remain in control of their data at all times. Apps must receive explicit permission before gaining access to health information, even if they were previously connected to ChatGPT. According to OpenAI, all third-party tools in Health go through additional security review and must meet strict privacy criteria. Access to medical records can be revoked at any time through settings.

ChatGPT Health is being rolled out in stages. At present, it is available only to a limited number of users on Free, Go, Plus, or Pro plans, excluding those in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Integration with medical records and certain app connections is currently available only in the United States.
