The Greek Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, participated in his first G7 finance ministers meeting, as the newly elected president of the Eurogroup, representing eurozone countries.

His election was announced by the Council of the European Union on December 11, the Greek minister having won the vote over Belgium’s deputy prime minister, Vincent Van Peteghem.

He will be replacing Paschal Donohoe, Eurogroup President since 2020, who steps down after leaving his role as Ireland’s finance minister to take a senior position at the World Bank.

“Today I participated in the last meeting of G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors under the Canadian Presidency,” Pierrakakis said in a brief social media post on Friday, accompanied by a photo of an e-meeting screen.

“I would like to thank François-Philippe Champagne for his leadership this year and I am looking forward to working next year with Roland Lescure under the French Presidency of the G7,” he added.

Pierrakakis’s first Eurogroup meeting to preside is expected in early 2026. Until then, he will coordinate with outgoing officials and prepare the agenda for his term.

During his two-and-a-half-year term, the Athens and Harvard Universities alumnum is expected to lead discussions as countries face slow growth, shifting interest rates, and the need for tighter economic cooperation.

Pierrakakis’s election at the prestigious role will give Greece an important leadership position at the core of the EU’s financial structure.
