Kilkis, a lesser-known gem in northern Greece, offers a mix of natural beauty, history, and cultural experiences. A new study has revealed that Kilkis is the most affordable destination in Greece and worth a visit, especially in autumn and winter.
Travel experts Acropolis Tickets & Tours analyzed average costs for holiday essentials, like meals, transport, and accommodation, ranking the destinations from most to least affordable.
Kilkis tops the list, with a total cost of $662. The mainland city had the lowest median price for a week’s accommodation, at $610, and the cheapest cost for a three-course meal for two people at a mid-range restaurant, at $20.
Magdalena Petrusic, a travel expert from Tours & Tickets, commented on the findings: “Greece isn’t typically seen as a budget-friendly destination, with popular spots like Mykonos and Santorini often drawing visitors despite being the priciest on the list!
“There are so many places on the mainland worth visiting that won’t drain your savings, like Kilkis, which has endless natural beauty, history, and cultural events.”
History of Kilkis
Findings dating back to as early as the Bronze and Iron Age have been excavated in the vicinity of Kilkis, including ancient tombs of the 2nd millennium BC. In classical antiquity, the wider region of Kilkis was ruled by the kingdom of Macedon.
In 2021 antiquities found near the town of Kilkis reveal the remnants of an ancient city unknown until recently.
The antiquities were found where ancient Vottiaia flourished in late classical/early Hellenistic times (late 4th/early 3rd century BC), according to Dr. Georgia Strateli, Director of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kilkis.
The site is 8 km (5 miles) north of the famous ancient Europos city, the birthplace of the founder of the legendary Seleucid Dynasty, Seleucus I Nicator, general of the army of Alexander the Great.

Cave of Agios Georgios (Saint George Cave)
