The village of Vorizia in Heraklion, Crete, turned into a “war zone” on Saturday after a massive exchange of gunfire, resulting in the deaths of at least two people and numerous injuries.
The incident is believed to be the latest and most violent episode in an entrenched vendetta (blood feud) between two local families.
Local media sources indicate the unprecedented violence was triggered by a bomb attack the previous day on a building under construction, likely owned by one of the feuding parties.
Unidentified assailants descended upon Vorizia, opening fire indiscriminately and reportedly unleashing thousands of rounds in an act of retaliation. The attackers are believed to have been armed with high-powered weapons, possibly Kalashnikov rifles. Gunfire was heard across the wider area for an extended period after the main attack.
Two people—a man and a woman—have been confirmed dead, with reports of a potential third fatality still unconfirmed by officials. At least 10 people were injured, including a child.
Security response to the vendetta in Crete
The deceased, including a 35-year-old man, were rushed to local hospitals (Venizeleio and PAGNI), along with several injured transported by private vehicles and pick-up trucks. Hospitals are currently operating under a heavy police presence.
Nearly the entire local EKAV (National Emergency Aid Center) force was mobilized, but police initially withheld permission for them to enter the unstable village to retrieve other potential casualties.
The severity of the incident prompted a high-level response from Greek law enforcement. The Chief of the Greek Police (EL.AS.), Dimitris Mallios, and the head of the Directorate for Addressing Organized Crime (DAOE), Fotis Douitsis, are traveling to Crete.
They are accompanied by a specialized team tasked with managing the fallout and investigation. The entire village remains under intense police lockdown.
The Cretan vendetta
The term “Vendetta” refers to a deeply rooted tradition of private justice and blood feuds in certain parts of Crete, particularly in the mountainous and more isolated regions.
While violent crime has become less common, these traditions persist and occasionally erupt devastatingly, as seen in Vorizia.
These feuds are governed by an unwritten code of honor and retaliation, often predating modern legal institutions. They represent a cultural concept of “honor debt” that can only be settled through the spilling of the opponent’s blood.
