Two years ago today, on October 7, 2023, a heinous terrorist attack was launched against Israel that resulted in the indiscriminate killing of civilians and initiated a dangerous, widespread escalation across the region, Greece’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement released Tuesday.

The statement combined a memorial for the victims with an urgent call for diplomatic action, referencing both the security crisis and the ensuing humanitarian catastrophe.

Greece: Remembering the October 7 victims and condemning antisemitism

The Foreign Ministry emphasized that its thoughts remain with the families of the hostages and called for their immediate release.

The Ministry also strongly condemned the global rise in hatred tied to the conflict, noting, “At the same time, the increase in anti-Semitic incidents, such as the recent attack in Manchester, requires collective action.”

Acknowledging the current reality, the statement shifted focus to the immense suffering in Gaza:

“Two years after the attacks of October 7, an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding in the Gaza Strip,” the Ministry added, calling “for an immediate ceasefire agreement and the provision of massive and unhindered humanitarian aid.”

In closing, the Greek government offered its assessment on the path toward de-escalation and long-term stability, identifying a specific political framework:

“The Plan of US President Donald Trump offers a tangible opportunity for the hostilities to end. It could also form the basis for the immediate launch of a peaceful political process that will lead to a two-state solution on the basis of International Law and the relevant UN Resolutions to create the conditions for sustainable peace and prosperity in the Middle East.”

The massacre in Israel

Today marks the two-year anniversary of the devastating attacks on Israel launched by Hamas on October 7, 2023. These coordinated incursions into Israeli towns and kibbutzim resulted in the brutal massacre of over 1,200 people, predominantly civilians, making it the deadliest single day for Jews since the Holocaust.

The attacks involved horrific acts of violence, including mass shootings, torture, and widespread sexual assault, with hundreds of attendees at the Nova music festival among the victims. Furthermore, militants abducted approximately 250 people, including children and the elderly, holding them hostage in Gaza.

The massacre immediately triggered the subsequent war, fundamentally reshaping the security landscape of the Middle East. The trauma of October 7 remains a defining event for Israelis and the Jewish diaspora worldwide.
