Elon Musk is building a new online encyclopedia, Grokipedia, through his artificial intelligence startup xAI. The project aims to challenge Wikipedia’s dominance by offering, what Musk describes as, a smarter and more accurate alternative.

The billionaire entrepreneur said Grokipedia will be powered by Grok, an AI chatbot he developed after expressing dissatisfaction with ChatGPT. With this new tool, Musk means to overhaul how online information is curated and delivered.

Musk introduced Grokipedia in a post on X, formerly Twitter, where he claimed it would offer major improvements over Wikipedia. He has repeatedly criticized the free encyclopedia, accusing it of left-leaning bias and calling for it to lose public donations.

His frustrations escalated earlier this year when Wikipedia published an article referencing accusations that Musk performed a Nazi-style salute at a Donald Trump inauguration event.

Grok to power the AI-driven encyclopedia

Musk says that Grok will serve as the engine behind Grokipedia. He said the AI is capable of analyzing online content, identifying what is true or misleading, and rewriting entries to correct or expand on the information.

Speaking on a podcast in September, Musk explained that Grok utilizes complex inference systems to assess existing Wikipedia pages, then filter out inaccuracies, and fill in missing context typically overseen by human editors.

However, Grok has not been without its own controversies. The chatbot previously came under fire raising concerns about its reliability and safeguards.

These issues add another layer of scrutiny as Musk pushes forward with plans to launch an encyclopedia rooted in artificial intelligence.

Criticism and competition from the Wikipedia founders

No official release timeline has been announced for Grokipedia. However, its arrival is expected to attract attention from Musk’s online following and conservative figures who share his criticism of Wikipedia’s editorial direction.

Wikipedia itself has experienced internal debates among its editing community over how to present sensitive events. Despite this, its defenders, including co-founder Jimmy Wales, maintain that the platform prioritizes accuracy.

Wales has also been a vocal critic of Musk’s handling of social media, particularly after Musk acquired Twitter. In 2023, Wales said trolls and extremists had overtaken the platform under Musk’s leadership.

Still, Musk appears focused on challenging established tech institutions. Just weeks before announcing Grokipedia, he revealed plans to compete with Microsoft by launching Macrohard, a company that would develop AI-driven alternatives to mainstream software.

Whether Grokipedia can match Wikipedia’s scale remains to be seen. The site ranks among the top 10 most visited in the world, making it a formidable competitor.
