A US woman who used the ChatGPT app on her phone to select lottery numbers has won $150,000—and is donating every dollar to charity.
Carrie Edwards of Midlothian, Virginia, matched four out of five numbers plus the Powerball in the Sept. 8 Virginia Lottery drawing. Although the base prize was $50,000, she had opted to spend an extra dollar on the Power Play feature, tripling her winnings to $150,000.
Edwards, who said she doesn’t regularly play the lottery, turned to artificial intelligence to help her make the picks. She recalled asking the ChatGPT app for numbers, and shortly after, bought her ticket online.
Two days later, while attending a work meeting, Edwards received a notification on her phone that read, “Please collect your lottery winnings.” She said she initially assumed it was a scam and dismissed the alert. However, after checking her numbers, she confirmed she had won.

The US woman said that from the moment she realized she had won the lottery with help from ChatGPT, she knew the money wasn’t hers to keep. Edwards described the win as a blessing she never expected and said it was clear to her that the entire amount should go to helping others.
She has pledged to divide the $150,000 equally among three nonprofit organizations, each closely related to her personal experiences.

One portion will be sent to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, a group that funds research and support for a form of early-onset dementia. Edwards’ husband died from the disease in 2024, and she said the donation honors his memory.
Another share will support Shalom Farms, a Richmond-based nonprofit dedicated to solving food insecurity through sustainable agriculture. Edwards said she believes deeply in the group’s mission to create food equity and help communities care for one another.
Honoring family through giving
The final part of her donation will benefit the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. Her late father, a former fighter pilot, supported the organization throughout his life. Edwards said giving to the group is a way of continuing his legacy.
As she prepares to distribute the funds, Edwards said the unexpected nature of the win made it even more meaningful. She called it a chance to pass on good fortune to others, especially those in need.
