A startling incident occurred on Friday in Halkidiki, one of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations. While playing with her mother on the beach in Neos Marmaras, a five-year-old girl was suddenly attacked by a wolf that approached from behind.
The girl’s mother, who is from Serbia, intervened and managed to fend off the animal. The child was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition; doctors say there is no ongoing danger to her health.
First Human Wolf Attack in Greek History
Local authorities report this is the first recorded case of a wolf attacking a human in Greece. Until now, wolves have been known to prey only on livestock or other animals, never people.
Video footage shows the wolf wandering through beach-bar areas, including between sunbeds both on the sand and inside the village. The animal has been seen in Neos Marmaras over recent days, causing growing concern among residents.
Community response and concerns about the wolf attack in Greece’s Halkidiki
Residents say the wolf has repeatedly ventured into populated areas, including the village and beach zones.
Many are alarmed by its boldness, especially around humans. Local officials have urged caution, especially for children, while wildlife experts are assessing how such an animal could lose its fear of humans.
Discussions are underway about reinforced monitoring and possible relocation of the wolf, if necessary.

Tourism in Halkidiki: Growth and Challenges
Halkidiki is one of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations. In 2024, demand from its top ten international markets rose by more than ten percent compared to the previous year, while domestic visitors accounted for nearly one-fifth of arrivals. The region remains attractive to families and couples, who represent approximately 80 percent of all travelers.
The accommodation landscape in Halkidiki reflects both its popularity and its shortcomings. The area offers approximately 49,500 hotel beds, complemented by nearly 50,000 beds in short-term rental properties and 40,000 in traditional rental rooms. Although the supply is abundant, tourism experts say that the destination now faces a need for higher-quality facilities and better diversification, particularly during the off-season.
Financially, tourism continues to power the local economy. In 2023, the combined turnover from accommodation and food services in Halkidiki reached about €462 million ($494 million), representing 2.3 percent of Greece’s national total in these sectors.
Growth was strong in the second quarter of the year, with lodging revenue rising by more than 20 percent and food services by 25 percent, underscoring the region’s growing weight in the national tourism industry.
