Kimon Bakos, the long-time banker who was a gentle force in the Greek American community and beyond, died in New York City on July 24, 2025. He was 86 years old.

Bakos was born on June 10, 1939, in Kifissia, a suburb of Athens, the capital of Greece. He attended the Panteion University in Greece and began his career at the National Bank of Greece. Several years later, the National Bank of Greece sent him to New York City to support its sister US banking institution, Atlantic Bank.

Bakos became a New Yorker and a prominent member of the Greek American community. Through Atlantic Bank, he helped launch dozens of businesses, making connections and mentoring young professionals in his free time. He always took great joy in seeing others succeed.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend Kimon Bakos, a valued colleague and longtime senior officer of Atlantic Bank and the National Bank of Greece, with whom we had the honor of working for 35 years,” said Nancy Papaioannou, a colleague and close friend of Bakos.

Papaioannou, who served as President and CEO of Atlantic Bank, described Bakos as one-of-a-kind both professionally and personally:

“Kimon served both institutions with unwavering dedication, professionalism, and integrity. His contributions helped shape the success and values of Atlantic Bank and greatly supported the Greek American community in the greater New York area for many years. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.”

David Slackman, a fellow banker, highlighted the important values Bakos instilled in him. “Kimon taught us the values of integrity, kindness, and gentleness,” he stated. “May his memory be a blessing.”

Kimon Bakos’ funeral will take place in Greece. Visitation services in New York City are scheduled for August 2, 2025, 1 to 4 p.m. at Joseph Farenga & Sons Inc., 38-08 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105.
