Following the dramatic Oval Office confrontation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump, EU and Canada rose again as reliable allies for Ukraine, reaffirming their commitment to Kyiv’s sovereignty and resistance against Russian aggression.
One European official after the other came public on social media to express their unequivocal support for the fight the Ukrainian people have been giving for three years now to stop Russia’s invasion.
EU Leaders React-“free world needs a new leader”
The clash between Zelensky and Trump left diplomatic observers stunned. Trump’s remark to Zelensky to negotiate peace with Russia or risk losing American support sent shockwaves through EU capitals.
Leaders across the continent swiftly rallied behind Ukraine, with French President Emmanuel Macron declaring, “There is an aggressor: Russia. There is a victim: Ukraine. We were right to assist Ukraine three years ago, and we must continue to do so.”
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas said, “Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge.”
The fallout from this meeting has raised questions about whether the US will continue to support Ukraine, prompting European leaders to double down on their commitments. Chancellor Olaf Scholz affirmed that “Ukraine can rely on Germany—and on Europe,” while Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk assured Zelensky, “You are not alone”. Similar messages of support were echoed by the most likely next German chancellor, Friedrich Merz.
Zelensky flew to London on Saturday to meet with King Charles and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as the UK is attempting to mediate between Ukraine and the increasingly angry administration in Washington. “You’re very, very welcome here in Downing Street,” Starmer told Zelensky. “And as you’ve heard from the cheers street outside, you have full backing across the United Kingdom, and we stand with you with Ukraine for as long as it may take.”
As for Athens, many eyebrows have been raised since the otherwise strong Ukraine-friendly government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis has gone silent. Analysts view the lack of public support from Greece as a new strategy, with some suggesting that Greece aims to remain unnoticed and avoid being under Trump’s radar, preventing potential missteps.
Why Europe’s shift from the US matters
From the Marshall Plan after World War II to NATO’s Cold War stance against Soviet expansionism, Europe has long relied on transatlantic unity for global security. However, Trump’s rhetoric has reignited fears of American disengagement among many European leaders, echoing moments like Charles de Gaulle’s push for European defense autonomy in the 1960s.
Today, leaders like Macron are revisiting these ideas, advocating for a European nuclear deterrent to reduce dependence on US military guarantees.
