After a year filled with remarkable achievements, NASA is set to keep pushing the boundaries of space exploration in 2025 with new missions, projects and programs.

“The next year promises to be another exciting one at Earth’s premier spaceport,” said Janet Petro, Director of Kennedy Space Center, NASA’s flagship field center based in Florida, United States. “We have an amazing workforce, and when we join forces with with industry and our other government partners, even the sky is no limit to what we can accomplish.”

Here are some things to expect from NASA in 2025:

New missions to the International Space Station

NASA is planning two crew rotation missions to the International Space Station (ISS) through its Commercial Crew Program (CCP) in collaboration with SpaceX, its commercial partner. The two missions, Crew-10 and Crew-11, mark the 25th year of crewed operations to the space station. Crew-9 will also return to the orbiting laboratory.

Moreover, in 2025, NASA plans several Commercial Resupply Services missions, utilizing SpaceX’s Dragon Cargo spacecraft, Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus aircraft and the inaugural flight of Sierra Space’s Cargo spaceplane, Dream Chaser. The missions will transport thousands of pounds of supplies, equipment and science investigations to the crew aboard the International Space Station.

Returning humans to the moon

Though NASA’ s Artemis II human moon mission has been delayed at least until April 2026, preparations at NASA are ramping up. According to the agency, all major components for the Space Launch System (SLS) hardware are already undergoing processing at the Kennedy Space Station, including the twin solid rocket boosters.

Exploration Ground System (EGS) teams will continue stacking the booster segments inside the spaceport’s assembly building. Subsequent integration and testing of the rocket’s hardware and Orion spacecraft will continue not only for the Artemis II mission but also for Artemis III and IV.

“Looking ahead to 2025, teams will embark on a transformative year as we integrate the flight hardware for Artemis II, while simultaneously developing the foundation for future Artemis missions that will reestablish humanity’s presence on the Moon,” said Shawn Quinn, EGS program manager.

Science missions going beyond the study of the solar system

NASA is preparing to launch three ambitious missions, aiming to explore not only the oute space but also Earth. In early 2025, NASA will launch a space telescope, called SPHEREx, to survey the universe using visible and near-infrared light, observing more colors than ever before and allowing astronomers to piece together a three-dimensional map of the universe with stunning accuracy. The telescope will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

The IMAP mission is scheduled to launch in late 2025 from Cape Canaveral in Florida and will help map out the heliosphere -the magnetic environment surrounding and protecting the solar system. IMPA will be carrying ten instruments to make its observations and will target and areas between Earth and the Sun that is easy for the spacecraft to maintain orbit.

Finally, in late 2025 NASA will launch Sentinel-6B, a satellite that will monitor global sea levels with unprecedented precision. Its predecessor, Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, launched in 2020 and has already been delivering crucial data. Sentinel-6B will ensure the continuation of the mission until 20230.

NASA also has in store several small satellite missions for 2025, including several missions to monitor the Sun, collect climate data and more.

2024, a year full of scientific discoveries and continued space exploration for NASA

In 2024, NASA’s Artemis II mission took significant strides towards returning humans to the moon, including announcing of the selection of its crew.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) continued to astound scientists with its ability to peer deeper into the universe than ever before.

NASA’s Europa Clipper has embarked to its long journey to Jupiter, where it will investigate Europa, a moon with an enormous subsurface ocean that may have conditions to support life.

At the same time, NASA launched several Earth science missions, using satellites and advanced instruments, in order to understand the planet’s complex systems and address urgent environmental challenges. C

rew rotations continued at the International Space Station, allowing for uninterrupted scientific research and technological developments while the agency’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate continued to revolutionize aviation with innovations such as NASA’s X-59 Quiet Supersonic Aircraft, designed to reduce the supersonic boom associated with supersonic flight. By mitigating the noise impact, this aircraft could enable faster and more efficient air travel.
