An ancient hidden “world” has been uncovered deep beneath the thick ice of Antarctica. Named Lake Enigma, this lake is covered in ice year-round and holds secrets scientists have only recently discovered.
For many years, researchers believed the lake was completely frozen. However, new findings have revealed a surprising layer of liquid water beneath the ice and fascinating ancient life forms.
Discovering the Hidden Lake
Scientists recently journeyed to Lake Enigma to explore its mysteries. Using special radar equipment, they scanned below the ice’s surface.
To their surprise, they found at least 40 feet (12 meters) of fresh liquid water hidden under the thick ice. To confirm their discovery, they drilled through the ice and lowered a camera to capture what lay beneath.
One of the biggest mysteries was where this water came from. The region has very little snow or rain, strong winds, and intense sunlight that causes rapid evaporation. Under these conditions, any water should have disappeared long ago.
By studying the salts in the water, scientists concluded that it likely comes from the Amorphous Glacier, which feeds the lake through a hidden underground pathway.

A surprising hidden world of microbial life
The real surprise came when the scientists found life in this ancient, sealed-off world. The bottom of Lake Enigma is covered with microbial mats – soft clumps of tiny living organisms. Some microorganisms use sunlight to make energy, increasing the lake’s oxygen levels.
The mats come in different shapes. Some form thin, spiky layers, while others resemble thick carpets. Some grow into tree-like shapes as tall as 16 inches (40 centimeters) and as wide as 24 inches (60 centimeters).
Discovery of Patescibacteria
Among the tiny creatures found in Lake Enigma are species of Patescibacteria. These single-celled organisms attach to larger cells to survive. They can either help their host or act as predators. This discovery was unexpected because Patescibacteria had never been found in ice-covered lakes.
They also don’t usually live in places with high oxygen levels. This suggests these ancient organisms have developed special ways to survive in extreme conditions.
