The ranking is published by Euromonitor International, a global research organization.
According to the report, over 70 million visitors traveled to Paris this year. The city’s strong tourism policies and well-developed facilities made it ready to welcome the crowds.
The index compares cities worldwide. It evaluates factors including tourism, environmental efforts, economic stability and safety measures to determine the rankings.

Overtourism becomes a big global headache
Euromonitor International highlights key travel trends for 2024. Many countries are streamlining their visa systems. Electronic travel authorizations and visa-free entry for short stays have become more common, making travel easier for many.
However, the growing number of tourists is creating challenges. Popular destinations are struggling with overcrowding. To address this, some cities have introduced tourism taxes and limited visiting hours to manage the flow of visitors.
Short-term rental restrictions are also increasing. Italy recently banned self-check-ins for Airbnb properties. This move is part of preparations for the Vatican’s Holy Jubilee Year in 2025, which is expected to attract large crowds.
The Top 100 City Destinations Index 2024 provides valuable insights into the success, appeal, and future prospects of urban destinations. It evaluates 100 cities using 55 different factors to calculate an overall attractiveness score.
The six key evaluation factors are economic and business performance, tourism performance, tourism infrastructure, tourism policy and attractiveness, health and safety, and sustainability.
World’s top 10 cities in international arrivals in 2024
In 2024 global international arrivals surged by 19%, reflecting a strong recovery in tourism. Europe remained the most visited region, with 793 million trips recorded during the year.
Bangkok emerged as the top city for international visitors, attracting 32 million travelers. The city not only surpassed its pre-pandemic tourism levels in 2023 but also saw remarkable growth exceeding 30% in 2024.
Tourism spending globally reached $1.9 trillion in 2024. By 2030, the average spending per visitor is predicted to climb to $1,264. Countries like the Netherlands, China, and Poland are expected to see the fastest growth in spending per trip over this period.
