Stories of people finding love in unusual ways are nothing new, but a few individuals have surprised the world by marrying objects instead of people. This unique type of bond, where someone feels strong love for a nonliving thing, is more common than you might think.

These five true stories showcase people who chose to express their love and even hold ceremonies to marry objects. These “partners” range from well-known landmarks to everyday items, showing how deep and meaningful these connections can be for those who feel them.

1. Erika LaBrie married Eiffel Tower

In 2007, Erika LaBrie, a former U.S. Air Force soldier, became widely known for her unique choice in love when she married the Eiffel Tower. After visiting Paris a few times, Erika felt a strong connection to the landmark and decided to make it official in a small ceremony with close friends.

She even changed her last name to “Eiffel” to honor her bond with the tower. Erika fondly refers to the Eiffel Tower as her “wife,” admiring its graceful design and saying, “Her structure is just amazing. You know, she’s got subtle, subtle curves, you know.”

2. Linda Ducharme married Ferris Wheel

Linda Ducharme, a woman from Florida, is married to a Ferris wheel she lovingly calls Bruce. Their unique story began in 1982 when Linda met Bruce at a carnival, sparking a relationship that lasted 30 years before they finally wed in 2012.

In 1986, a severe storm damaged Bruce, forcing him into retirement from the carnival. Determined to stay connected, Linda claimed Bruce’s remains and invested thousands of dollars to restore him, allowing them to spend the rest of their lives together.

She describes her feelings, saying, “Bruce is my world, I think about him constantly, it just completely feels right when I’m with Bruce.”

3. Aaron Chervenak married his phone

Aaron Chervenak took his connection with his smartphone to an unusual level by marrying it in a ceremony at the Little Vegas Chapel. For him, this act was meant to show just how deeply people rely on their phones.

He said, “If we’re gonna be honest with ourselves, we connect with our phones on so many emotional levels. We look to it for solace, to calm us down, to put us to sleep, to ease our minds, and to me, that’s also what a relationship is about. In a sense, my smartphone has been my longest relationship.”

4. Amanda Liberty married to a Chandelier

Amanda Liberty, from England, has an unusual love for chandeliers. She owns more than 20 hanging lamps and considers herself in “open relationships” with them. Among them, her favorite is a 91-year-old chandelier named Lumiere.

Amanda has expressed her devotion, saying, “I’m determined to have this commitment ceremony, to prove that I’m here for Lumiere and that my love is going to last.”

5. Eija-Riitta married to the Berlin Wall

One of the most remarkable cases of someone marrying an object involves Eija-Riitta, who has been devoted to the Berlin Wall for nearly three decades. She says she fell in love at age seven when she first saw the wall on TV.

Eija-Riitta’s attachment grew over the years, leading her to collect photos of the wall until she eventually married it in 1979. She even adopted the last name “Berliner-Mauer,” meaning “Berlin Wall” in German.
